Just when you think you knew all about MEXICAN beers (Reply to this comment)

Interesting subject about Mexican beers. For starters, I happen to like CORONA. It goes down good in the tropics. It's a light beer with thin viscocity, goes great with a lime. Now I wouldn't drink a Corona in dead of winter here in the USA because, for cold weather, I prefer the thick, dark beers, or WINTER BREW. Right now, I happen to have TWO BOTTLES OF PACIFICO in my freezer, trying to cool them down so I can drink them up. I never had those in Mexico. My usual beer when traveling in Mexico is DOS EQUIS with a lime, mainly in Acapulco or Cozumel. But one beer you didn't mention that you probably never heard of. And it is quite readily available around MERIDA, and sometimes in Cozumel. It's a YUCATAN BEER called MONTEJO. It taste good in Mexico. Sometimes beer in Mexico taste better in Mexico. I like LONE STAR beer in Texas. I like TONA in Nicaragua. I like PILSEN in Costa Rica. I like BALBOA in Panama. Now, I'm fixin to try a PACIFICO here in Houston. Looks like a Corona from the same yellow color. Probably goes good with a lime.

A few micorbreweries have sprung up in Mexico in the last few years, including Cucapa, in Mexicali. I just had one of their brews this afternoon. Not a knockout, but not bad, either.

Mexican microbrew beers (Reply to this comment)
by guachoo
This article is kind of old and probably true back then. Now there are a handful of Mexican microbrews and surprisingly are selling in the states. The ones I know about are Cucapa Beer and Tijuana Beer. They each have several types - all very good. I know in San Diego they are selling them. Here are their sites: www.tjbeer.com , www.cucapa.com and the distributor in San Diego is www.brewdistributing.com

HA HA HA! That made me laugh quite a bit!

I also found how you encoded your email adress very amusing. Nice....

About the best mexican beer I have tried is Negro modelo which my wife likes a lot, perhaps more than I do. I would like to try more, but the local selection is poor. There is always mail order, but beer becomes very bulky; it's better to mail order tequila.

My family loves Corona (Reply to this comment)

but I hate it. There are always coolers full at all our family parties. When we got on the subject they talked about how good it was with a slice of lime. Well I agree that it is better with a slice of lime. I like the taste of lime better than the taste of Corona. Most things taste better with a ton of sugar in them too.

Thanks for the great info. I am inspired to keep an eye out for some of your Mexican recommendations.

Hola, cerveza! (Reply to this comment)

A real fan of several of the Mexican brand brews here -- Tecate, especially, is a longtime favorite.

Salted rim on a frosted mug, fresh lime squeezed in the beer, my Dad used to call them poor man's margaritas.

For some reason, my favorite time to enjoy them is after a long day of Christmas shopping with my wife. She runs my wheels off, then we both relax at a quiet restaurant with a couple of cold Tecates.

Feliz Navidad!

Michael Jackson did just tour this brewery as Casta Morena was this month's selection from his Real Beer Tour. It's an excellent brew and a real surprise too from Mexico. I have to add a review on this one, although I didn't hurry as I still have 7 left.
