Terra Cotta Morning Madness

The Bottom Line Find something you can all be a part of and have fun.

I have been digging through my craft room/office lately to come up with some things to do with my 2 and a half year old. She is getting to the point where she is really getting into "doing" the crafts. She likes to cut up paper and paste it, she loves to paint, she draws all the time. So I have been brainstorming.

Thanks to the parent and tot Waldorf class we have been in, and maybe Spring, my creativity has been poked and is awakening. I have been on a mad journey to find things to do all the time. My hands are not satisfied unless they are doing something these days.

So, the other morning, yes when we first awoke, my daughter wanted to paint. I saw the terra cotta pots I had bought the day before and my mind started working. We could paint these things I thought!! Better yet, when I turned and looked in the door of the craft room, there was a bag of felt remnants on the floor. We were going to have a cut and paste party....

Materials
Scissors
Felt (many colors)
Glue
Terra Cotta pots
Imagination
Patience

The Process
Cut the felt into different shapes. Place some glue in a cup, and using q-tips spread the glue over the felt piece and apply to the terra cotta pot.

Hmmm...
Sounds simple, doesn't it? Well, not so simple. Here are a few suggestions from my trial and error.

-It may make your life easier to cut out the pieces before presenting this project to your child. My daughter was pasting the pieces (sort of) before I could cut them. Of course this depends on the age of your child.

-Make sure the pot is dry. Somehow ours got a little wet, and it made it hard to stick the pieces on in some areas.

-Make sure you use a good glue, like a Tacky Glue or craft glue. We started with a kids, non-toxic, washable glue, and well....it didn't wash. The pieces kept falling off. However, we finally got it to work with A LOT of glue on the pieces and the pot. I went ahead and used some wood glue on mine that seemed to work fine (I couldn't find my tacky glue and it needed to be done NOW!)

-Have Fun! That is what it is all about, and now I have some interesting planters.

Some Additional Suggestions
As far as the design, these are a couple that I came up with, but there is always room for creativity.

-Trees Cut out the shape of a tree from brown felt. Then cut out leaves from all diffferent colors. Glue the tree on first, then the leaves all over the tree. It looks very Fall.

-Seascape Cut, in blue, a wavy piece of felt long enough to go around the bottom of your pot. Cut out fish and seaweed and a boat.

-Houses Cut out any shape house you want. Cut a long strip of green long enough to cover the bottom. Cut down the strip, not going all the way to the bottom. Glue the strip to the bottom and pull forward the pieces you cut to create grass. Paste the house on. Then cut out windows and a door and glue them on. Maybe cut out some flowers too.

That is all for this project. I definitely have some interesting looking pots, none that I have ever seen, and I display them proudly on my plant table at the top of my stairs

Use your imagination and have fun! Thanks for reading.
