| soccerbudd's Full Review: 2004 Chrysler Sebring Convertible |
Today's date is 10/25/04, and I purchased my 2004 Chrysler Sebring Convertible LX on August 28th, 2003. In just over a year, the car's accrued a ton of problems and annoyances. Not only was the buying experience at the Chrysler dealership a joke, but the car itself is a joke as well.
When I bought the car, I was ecstatic. This was my first new car and it was sleek, solid and fun to drive! Well, that all changed within about two weeks. The first time I took the car on the highway, I was appalled to find out how loud the wind is due to the convertible top. Because the top latches on the left and right side of the windshield, a large amount of air gets forced in through the middle. Some times I pull the top down in the middle (until my arm gets tired) to get rid of the wind-tunnel sound. It really stinks when you can't hear your passengers or even the radio when you're driving 70 mph.
Secondly, when I'm driving around 70 mph, wind begins to whistle next to my left ear where the small rear window meets the driver's side window. It's rather annoying, and I found the only way to stop it is to stuff a napkin between the small rear window and the convertible top. It also makes the whistling at any speed when you turn on the air/vent higher than setting "2".
One of the major problems is that the convertible top motor barely works anymore. I've had this car 15 months and the convertible top struggles to go back up. On a couple of occasions the motor either overheated or lagged out, and my top stopped half way up. After a couple of minutes, I tried again, and was able to get it to latch.
I recently took a trip to Colorado from St. Louis, and we drove my car. After about 2/3 of the trip to Colorado, my check engine light came on (I'm not really that surprised). We decided to continue on with the trip and fix it when we got back. The car does handle differently since the light came on. It seems to be struggling to stop when I step on the brakes.
Also, the car has no power when driving. It was embarassing to drive through the mountains since my car maxed out at 55 mph going uphill. Huge tractor trailers were passing me.
In addition to all of these major upsets...the car just sounds like junk when I drive it. Things squeak and rattle everywhere, and I can't seem to find the source of any of the noises. It was solid when I got it, but quickly lost that appeal and "loosened" up.
I don't drive my cars hard at all, and living in Missouri isn't too extreme. As such, this car should be holding up much better. I've had a Geo Metro convertible and a Cavalier convertible, and NEVER had the types of issues I'm having with the Sebring.
I should have stuck with GM products and left Chrysler in the dust.
In short...check out the Saab 93 or the Audi A6 before buying a Chrysler convertible.
