My roller coaster thru anime - for those starting outMay 31 '01 Write an essay on this topic. The Bottom Line Take a look to see my views on the anime I've seen. First off, let me say I am not, and never will be a otaku. Otakus are hardcore fans of anime, and I simply am not. I love it and all, but anime is a movie form, and is subject to the same highs and lows as motion pictures. This means some are better then others, some are HORRIBLE and to be stayed away from. The series I like are: Cowboy Bebop Without a doubt my number 1 favorite, it got me hooked on the format and is still REPEATEDLY (as in more then 50 times) viewed. I use it as a standard crash course for all my friends into what anime "Is all about". The characters exude a feeling of cool, the animation is slick and the music... give Yoko Kanno a Grammy! Overall the greatest series of all time. The DVDs come highly recommended, only 6 to buy and their quality and extras are very nice. GET IT! Serial Experiments: LAIN This was freaky. I'm a techno person, intellectually advanced and everything... so I was blown away by the story. Although it moves like a snail, the plot slowly builds up speed and size until a far reaching conspiracy and the DESTRUCTION OF GOD is faced in the end. If you are offended by religous views of others, stay away from this. The weird animation and video style gives me reason to compare it to "Twin Peaks" or a show like that. It deals with a world of hackers (the 'Wired') and how a little girl rises from a computer illterate to the leader of a revolution that again, brings down God and puts her in his place. A very good anime, but my friend found it slow and confusing. A try before you buy. If you like it, good for you! Ghost in the Shell Long considered a classic, this cyber-future look at the idea of robotics and the human soul is a jaw dropping way to enter anime. Although violence and artistic nudity abounds, I recommend it to everyone. The score is haunting and the chorus intro is excellent. A overall great movie with super animation and sound. The plot leaves you to interpret the place of humans in the world. it's another "thinking mans" anime. Princess Mononoke My brother's favorite even though he doesn't understand it, this is a great movie. Brought to you by Studio Ghibli (of Totoro fame), it focuses on the fight between man and nature. I couldn't see this pulled off in a real life movie without looking cheesy, so the animated edge gives it a great chance to mess around with "animal gods", sophisticated incarnations of raw animal spirit. A lot of stars contributed to the dub, so if you hate subs... shame on you and you'll enjoy this. The classical score is again, excellent. Nadesico also known as Martian Successor Nadesico and Mobile Battleship Nadesico I don't know about this one. A semi-funny relationship anime, it's pretty good but a few points hold it down. The adventures seem a little too uninteresting at first, but once the plot gets rolling it's a really cool look at the meaningless casualties of war. Especially funny is the crews fascination with a old school anime "Gekinger 3". No, this anime doesn't actually exist, but it's a spot on spoof of the early anime in terms of hair, plot and animation. Great! Another try before you buy to see if you like it. NOTE: I HAVE NOT SEEN EVANGELION OR ESCAFLOWNE YET. Don't stone me, I don't have enough money to cover the DVDs. When I do, they'll be here and I'll update this review to include them. It's fun to watch other shows then this to compare quality, but I think I picked out a pretty good batch for you beginners and intermediates alike to get started on. Until next time... SEE YOU LATER SPACE COWBOY! |
