The Ten Best Love Stories
Jun 01 '01
The Bottom Line These movies are great for a cozy evening in front of the TV with a bowl of popcorn. Some of these are real tear jerkers so have lots Kleenex handy!
Some of the movies on this list are true greats. Others have been award winners or may actually even be cheesy. The thing is they establish just the right mood if you are planning a cozy evening in front of the TV and are hoping to get lucky. A few of these movies have sad endings and I mark these with a :-( . These may be best watched alone so you can cry into your popcorn without anyone teasing you. The happy, feel good movies will be marked :-), of course.
10) Untamed Heart
Okay, I know this is not an Oscar quality flick here, but it is oh so romantic. My husband even cried, though he won't admit it. It features young twenty-somethings Marisa Tomei and Christian Slater in a passionate, yet doomed love affair. :-(
9) A Walk in the Clouds
One word here: sexy. It is beautifully filmed, and very romantic. Starring Keanu Reeves and Aitana Sanchez-Gijon as a couple posing to be married and end up falling in love for real. May be kind of sappy, but it works for me. :-)
8)First Knight
Another slightly cheesy, but still very romantic film. The setting is Camelot and of course it is about the legendary love triangle between King Arthur, Guinevere, and Sir Lancelot. Sean Connery, Julia Ormond and Richard Gere star in this film about love and betrayal. :-(
7)Gone With the Wind
This is a very long movie, so you will probably need to plan accordingly. This epic tale that takes place during the Civil War, is about a southern belle named Scarlett who goes from being the lady of the plantation to scrounging for her next meal, and then to being an adroit businesswoman, all the while chasing after a married man and marrying several times herself. I am not going to rate this one because it doesn't really have a happy or a sad ending.
6) Wings of the Dove
This movie is inspired by a Henry James novel and it is definitely a period piece. Kate (Helena Bonham Carter) is not a wealthy woman, but her aunt expects her to marry well. Her man of choice, Milton (Linus Roache) is not a wealthy man. Kate cooks up a scheme involving a terminally ill American heiress named Millie (Alison Elliot) who has an eye for Milton. This movie is very well done and not even remotely cheese. :-(
5)Ghost
A movie about love after death.....what could be more romantic? Patrick Swayze and Demi Moore star as the loving couple separated by the murder of Swayze. This movie has some very, very sexy scenes...clay anyone? It is also quite a tear jerker, but even though it can't end perfectly happy, the end won't leave you sad and gloomy.
4)Breakfast at Tiffany's
Audrey Hepburn stars as a wild New York City party girl and George Pepard is the young writer who wants to save her from her self-destructing lifestyle. This movie is deeply touching and very well acted. :-)
3)The African Queen
This movie is extremely entertaining. I just watched it again recently, and you just feel good during pretty much the whole thing. Humphrey Bogart stars as the alcoholic river boat captain and Katherine Hepburn portrays the prim missionary spinster. There is some real chemistry at work here, in some parts of this movie you will feel the sexual tension. :-)
2)Somewhere in Time
You don't find a film much more romantic than this one. Christoper Reeve plays a modern playwright who falls head over heels in love with the portrait of a beautiful actress, played by Jane Seymour. His feelings are so strong that he uses self-hypnosis to go back in time and meet her. This movie yet again has the kind of ending that can not really be called happy or sad.
1)An Affair to Remember
Okay, this movie is made fun of so often for its tear jerking power over women, but it works for me! Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr star as a couple who fall in love on a ship and decide to meet in six months at the top of the Empire State Building to see if their feelings are true. :-)
