Thanks Suzanne! I have learned a lot over the last 20 years, and I hope people can learn from my misakes! We all want our kids to be as safe as possible.

Don't worry, creosote poles are NOT going up in our yard! Thanks for the kind words.

Very handy guide! (Reply to this comment)

Nice to hear swingsets have to be anchored. I was about 4 or 5 and playing in a sandbox when some "big kids" swinging standing-up on a small swingset knocked it right over. A corner of the swingset caught me on the scalp. Luckily I just needed stitches - could have been a lot worse!
Wonderful guide you've written here.

Wonderful information! (Reply to this comment)

We are in the process of planning a swingset/playyard that we will build ourselves, and this is great information!
Also..My husband wants to use telephone poles for the legs - and these are coated with creosote which is a great wood preservative, but I consider it toxic. In addition, if creosote gets on clothing (or even skin!) it's impossible to get out again. I would NOT recommend using telephone poles or anything treated with creosote where kids are going to be playing.
Thanks!
