The first thing any taxpayer needs to understand about returns is that you only have one set of information to report and the numbers aren’t going to change depending on what software you use to prepare your tax return. What may change are the types of forms your online tax preparer offers. The more forms that are available the more likely you are to get a credit for each item you qualify for. What confuses me most is taxpayers that say company A got them a bigger refund than company B even though the person has a basic return. Before looking at the companies I would question whether or not the person gave each company the same information or not. For instance a friend of mine said she used company A to do her tax return but wasn’t getting a very big refund, so she decided to try another company. She claims the second company got her a bigger refund. I happen to know she has a standard return and does not itemize, so I don’t see how the return can be any different – unless she made an error with the information she put in. Taxpayers need to pay close attention when typing in their information as they prepare their return online. The company isn’t responsible if you type in your information wrong, however they are responsible if the calculations are incorrect. It’s a good idea to try out 2 companies before you actually file your return. Most online software lets you log in and prepare a return before paying for it. Try running your return through 2 different companies and see if the results are the same. If the results aren’t the same then try to determine where on the return the differences are coming up – then contact support and ask them about it. It make take a little more time to do your taxes twice, but the security of knowing it’s being done correctly may be worth that extra hour or two.  |
