The Art of SuspenseJun 01 '01 Write an essay on this topic. The Bottom Line These films will keep you on the edge of your seat. They are my very favorites and examples of some of Hitchcock's best! My most favorite suspense films are all directed by Alfred Hitchcock. His films have kind of a perfect quality to them that you feel everytime you see one. They are artfully executed (pardon my term). 10)Spellbound-1945 This is a movie about an amnesia victim who has been accused of murder and the psychiatrist who falls in love with him as she tries unwrap his past. There are quite a few twists and turns in the one. Stars Gregory Peck and Ingrid Bergman as the amnesiac and his Dr. 9)Psycho-1960 Janet Leigh and Anthony Perkins star in this very creepy movie that gives Mama's boys a new look. This movie will keep you on the edge of your seat. Try taking a shower at home alone right after this one....I dare you. 8)North By Northwest-1959 A case of mistaken identity is the basis for this terrific film starring Cary Grant and Eva Marie Saint. Grant plays a New York ad executive who is mistaken for someone else then framed for murder. There are lots of dramatic effects used in this one. 7)To Catch a Thief-1955 This is movie takes place in the south of France. A former jewel thief, played by Cary Grant, is the primary suspect when a thefts start occurring at the ritzy hotels. Grace Kelly plays the beautiful American tourist who catches his eye. (A piece of Trivia...Grace Kelly met future husband Prince Rainer during the filming of this movie.) 6)The Man Who Knew Too Much-1956 Jimmy Stewart and Doris Day star as an American couple who get caught in a web of international intrigue while vacationing in Morocco with their young son. This is a remake of Hitchcock's 1934 film of the same title. 5)Vertigo-1958 Jimmy Stewart stars as a detective who has just retired because of his extreme fear of heights. An old college friend begs his to take on one last case, following his beautiful young wife (Kim Novak). This one will keep you guessing and guessing. 4)Rebecca-1940 A simple American girl (Joan Fontaine) meets and marries a brooding, but wealthy Englishman (Laurence Olivier) still obsessed with the death of his first wife. The housekeeper is one of the most sinister characters I have seen in film. 3)Dial "M" for Murder-1954 Ray Milland stars as a husband with a creative plan for getting rid of his unfaithful wife, played by Grace Kelly. Unfortunately for him his plan doesn't exactly work out the way he was planning. 2)Rope-1948 Now, this one is creepy. Two college guys murder their friend for fun and stuff his body in a large trunk. Then they host a party and serve food off the trunk to the deceased's family and friends. Sicko....I Love it! Stars Jimmy Stewart, John Dall, and Farley Granger. This movie was shot in complete uncut 10 minute takes and has an interesting look. 1)Rear Window-1954 I can never say enough good things about this film. Starring two of my absolute favorites (you have probably noticed this) Jimmy Stewart as photographer who is laid up with a broken leg and Grace Kelly as his classy socialite girlfriend. While his leg is mending the photographer has taken a voyeuristic interest in his neighbors and happens to witness the cover up of what he believes may be a murder. Edge of your seat suspense, wonderful acting, and Hitchcock's innovative camera work. If you go out and rent these tonight I don't think you will be disappointed. Each one is a masterpiece in the style of filming, costuming, acting, and of course, directing. |
