The Bottom Line: Great tech support, customer service, and delivery.

I earn my living as a computer consultant. If I make a bad suggestion to a client, it cost me a great deal of money. So I try to be very careful about the advise that I provide.

To date, my experiences with Micron have been extremely positive. They really seem to go the extra mile when it comes to customer service.

In researching this company, I learned that their forte' is in the field of memory chips. They own a substantial chunk of the market. Their computer systems integration division is only a tiny segment of their overall business.

Yet, I am extremely impressed with the professional nature of how they conduct business.

Last week I ordered a Millennia MAX GS133 from them. I was told it would take 6 to 10 days to have this system built. Two days later, I received an automated call on my voice mail informing me of the UPS tracking number for the system I had ordered.

The next day I received a follow-up call from my sales representative. The system arrived ahead of schedule, and my client was able to easily set it up without any assistance from me. Taking a lesson from the folks at Apple, every cable is color coordinated. Plug the red plug into the red jack and anyone who isn't color blind can make it work!

System performance and reliability are excellent. Micron includes an excellent warranty with their product line, and offers truly spectacular customer support, including an 800 number. You can actually speak to knowledgeable technicians who will help you to solve problems on the phone.

Micron will help you to create systems that meet your specifications. If you want some odd-ball card or peripheral included in the system, they will accommodate you.

In a day when customer service is a buzzword that is often invoked but rarely provided, I can only heap praise upon Micron.

The Millennia MAX GS133 is a technicians dream come true. The case it comes in is easy to open and access. The components are easily accessible. Software is all there in the form of disks that can be reloaded if necessary, meaning that you don't have to go through the tedium of creating software backup disks from a preloaded hard drive, as is required by some other major computer vendors.

So you might pay a few bucks more for a Micron system, but in the long run, as the old adage goes: "You gets what you pays for." And with Micron, I think you get a really good deal.

Update: A client informed me that they developed a single bad sector on their hard drive. I suggested they call Micron tech support for the purpose of getting this fact "on the record." Most major hardware vendors consider a single bad sector as a minor issue, and will advise a customer to call back if they have ten or more bad sectors. Not Micron. They dispatched a technician to replace the hard drive! I was quite impressed by this action.
