| brooks4570's Full Review: 1998 Volvo V70 AWD |
After six (6) years and 120K miles with our 1998 Volvo V70 AWD wagon (estate), the driving remains enjoyable and the vehicle solid and robust. The AWD system has been flawless in operation with no unplanned maintenance, and is a big assist in our winter climate (mid Michigan USA).
With a lot of mixed city/highway driving, average fuel mileage is around 24 mpg, with closer to 27 mpg on long expressway trips cruising at 75-80 mph (slightly better mpg if you stay within the speed limits).
Two accidents (both times others at fault) and the car kept us safe while the offenders' vehicles paid the price for messing about with a finely tempered piece of hardened Swedish steel like the V70. Repairs made using OEM parts and the car shows no adverse affects.
Disappointments have been with costly repairs to the air conditioning system, brakes, and all those pesky sensors. Otherwise, the car runs strong. We also have a 1995 Volvo 850 sedan with 160K miles on the odometer and it, too, is a strong runner and exhibited similar maintenance issues to the 1998, so no surprises.
"Highs" include the seating comfort, reasonably powerful acceleration, good visibility, and solidness of the chassis and body.
All things considered, we'd buy another one and wish the 850/70 series vehicles were still manufactured and imported to the USA. The newer 40 and 60 series are too small, while the 80 series vehicle is not the car for us. The contemporary V70 is a good candidate, and for those with SUV leanings so may be the V90.
