Ride with the Devil (Reply to this comment)

I believe that this was made for HBO. Great movie about the Confederate "Bushwhackers" in Missouri
and the Lawrence raid. Perhaps the best film ever about this side of the American Civil War.....

Theeviravaathi: The Terrorist (1999)is film involving the assassination of Rajeev Ghandi during the Tamil Eelam Civil War in Sri Lanka. Done well considering the low budget. I recommend watching in the original language Tamil with English subtitles.
Taegukgi hwinalrimyeo (2004), Tae Guk Gi: The Brotherhood of War is about the Korean civil war. Big budget with some top acting, Again watch in original language.
These two movies might not be in the top ten but are worth a watch.

Nice list, my view (Reply to this comment)

Hi ... I like your list, and I love Civil War movies. After a quick look I would have put Gettysburgh much higher (maybe cause it's a favorite place of mine:) and included Santa Fe Trail (pre-Civil War but great movie about tensions leading up to the war). Can't believe I bought that movie (Sante Fe) for $1.

John Wayne and the Civil War (Reply to this comment)
by bullitt56
John Wayne did play in many movies that took place right after the Civil war. Mr Wayne was in a Civil War Movie called "The Horse Soldiers" with William Holden.

Great Top Ten List, isn't The Civil War an incredible documentary? Burns has done some good stuff. Keep it up.

Absolutely no argument with the top five. I was glad to see Shenandoah in the top ten. One of my favorites is Major Dundee. Thanks for your views.

I am particularly glad to see you include An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge & The General. Two of my favorites. Nicely done as usual. - Ed

The Birth of a Nation absolutely disgusted me. The subject matter, the horrendous stereotypes of blacks, and the venomous ideological matter all made me sick. But you are aboslutely right: The Birth of a Nation did give rise to the "blockbuster." Technically, D.W. Griffith is a genius who introduced filmmaking as a true art form.
Great list John!

Some overlooked classics, and some (justified) standards. I'm saving this one!

Fiddle-dee-dee.
Depends on the perspective--artistically, The General would rank above GWTW... but as a Civil War genre piece, GWTW gives a better overall picture of the war.

GWTW doesn't deserve the top slot, so there! (Reply to this comment)

Someone has said -- or at least written -- it.
There are those who think "The General" is the greatest film, so it must also be the greatest Civil War film, a far more restrictive category.
