| tommy_lop's Full Review: Street Fighter II for Super Nintendo |
I remember when I first played Street Fighter 2. It was at my sister birthday, and mom had rented it to keep my friends busy. I sucked at it and I still do but man did I have a lot of fun. Well I recently got the Street Fighter collection for the PS2 so I decided to go down memory lane.
Story.
Ok now I am not to sure on the story supposedly you pick one of 8 fighters who want to win the street fighter tournament, about half of them have a beef with the raining champion M.Bison. But the story doesnt really matter much because the main idea of the game is to beat the crap out of your opponent in till he doesnt move, theres not much text any where in the game.
Graphics.
The graphics are also pretty good in this game, the characters are big and there well animated. The special moves are flashy. The backgrounds while a bit drabbed in the original compared to the million upgrade editions still have a lot of eye candy. The Super NES version does have some slow down compared to the genesis version but then the Super NES had a way better control pad for this kind of gameplay.
Sound.
The music in this is pretty good, each stage has its own theme, and they match the country and area of the world where there from. The sound effects and talking are a bit off in the Super Nintendo version. Having characters talking in games in those days was unusual and they usually came off has bad, and Street Fighter 2 is no exception. You cant understand a lot of things the characters say, for example Ryu Hydokuen sounds like he just said he ate mucas..
Gameplay.
Well first off if you have played Tekken, DBZ Budokai, and Moron Kombat then you owe it all to this game. It started the design of one on one fights in which each character had super moves. Ryu and Ken had there Hydoukens, Guile had his flash kick and Sonic boom, Chun Li could do a lighting kick, and Blanka could electrocute people who came to close to him.
The AI in the game is pretty good and better then a lot of fighting games that are made today. Unlike Moron Kombat where one special move is all that is needed to win Street Fighter wont let you get away with using just one move over and over again. Sure you could do Hydouken and get 3 or 4 hits on the easy mode but eventually the computer will jump over it and start to kick the crap out of you. You have to mix and match the special moves our your going to get your clock cleaned.
Has far has violence goes Street Fighter 2 has some blood in it but its my no means Mortal Kombat. A few of the SNES editions had some of the blood cut but not my much. Blood comes out when ever a person gets hit in the face, and at the end when the winner taunts the loser they show a picture of the loosers face all beat up.
The one down side to Street Fighter 2 though is that its one player mode is short, even back then fighters like this only lasted about 2 or 3 days on 1p before you beat it with every one and was ready to shelve it. If you had friends who where in the game though the game could easily last several months has its 2 player mode is really addictive.
Final recommendation.
If youre a classic gamer and have friends who are classic gamer who owe it to either buy the Street Fighter anniversary collection or find the SNES or Geneisis versions. Then get a bunch of friends together because its an addictive game. If you dont I recommend skipping it inless your just a fan of fighting game.
