Very Nearly Beats BMW At Its Own Game, For Thousands Less
by drive571 | Nov 05 '04
Pros: Sports-car muscle from V6 engine, comfortable interior, generally confident demeanor with no glaring flaws.
Cons: Grabby brakes, unfocused styling, stiff-shifting six-speed, chassis not as well-balanced as some rivals.

Re: Grabby Brakes a Con? (Reply to this comment)

Citing the stopping power of the brakes as a con would, indeed, be strange. It was the brake pedal's feel that I couldn't get used to, as its response to gentle inputs seemed unnaturally touchy to me. There are other cars with extremely strong brakes that offer firmer, more natural pedal feel--the MX-5, 3-Series, and Corvette, for example.

That said, I do know a number of people who enjoy grabby pedals--specifically, those in the VW Jetta and Golf--because it's a constant reminder of the car's ability to stop. Guess it's a matter of taste.

Grabby Brakes a Con? (Reply to this comment)
by shanejayhayes

listing the power of the brakes on the G35 as a con seems down right strange. The G35 has probably the best brakes in the industry (stops better than a Ferrari actually).

Don't know about you but I like knowing I can stop my car at anytime with complete control.

Great review overall. I love my G35 with all my heart and it has always been very good to me.

With the price in the same range as the performance-only STI, same power, weight, just RWD instead of AWD - I'm wondering if the G35 is another path I should think about in the future. :)

Re: Subaru (Reply to this comment)

My experience was that the G35 only feels a little classier. It's got a higher beltline that makes the cabin feel more enclosed, and its engine noises are deeper-chested than the Subaru's thrashy tenor.

But Subaru actually has the advantage in structural solidity, interior quality, and handling confidence. Allowing for differences in personal tastes, I'd call it a draw between the two. Interesting to be comparing Subaru with Infiniti, though, huh?

I haven't driven an Infiniti but my expectation is that it has a classier feel than a Subaru. That said, I thought that the turbo engine in the 2005 Subarus was excellent... I think people are gonna love 'em.

I had a Mitsubishi pickup truck years ago that had a stiff shifter when it was cold out. The owner's manual said that if shifting was stiff in cold weather that the 75W-90 gear oil in the transmission could be replaced with 10W-40 motor oil. I did this and the transmission was MUCH easier to shift. I don't know if Infiniti says the same thing in its manual, so I'd have to study the situation before recommending it.

Incidentally, the manual transmission in a 2001 Corvette uses Dexron III automatic transmission fluid!! I helped my neighbor change the fluid in his 'Vette a couple weeks ago and was very surprised to see this. Although there is a sticker a couple inches away from the transmission filler port stating that Dexron-III ATF should be used, I didn't believe it. We checked the manual and it also said Dexron-III ATF for the MANUAL transmission, and a visit to an autoparts store confirmed it. Weird!

Thanks for stopping by. I have no idea about the oil improving the transmission feel... maybe?

I wasn't really expecting the oversteer either. I had read about it in some magazine tests, but figured it only manifested itself in high-speed track driving. The G35 did push just a little near the edge, but I didn't think I could get the tail to slide in low-speed, autocross-style driving.

There are still a few cars left for me to test in this market segment, but the Subaru Legacy GT is shaping up to be my favorite. Quite the surprise!

I wonder if synthetic gear oil or even motor oil might make the shifting easier. Too bad that such a seemingly simple thing cast doubt on an otherwise nice car.

Funny about the oversteer... I would have expected understeer from this car.

Nice review!
