Oust Air Sanitizer - Not A Dream Spray

Written: Nov 07 '04
Pros:None really
Cons:Limited choices, limited spray
The Bottom Line: Not an effective odor control product at all.

I knew some day I'd purchase Oust Air Sanitizer - I was just hooked in by the tv commercials and claims. I really was curious about this spray and how it would hold up to a spray product like Lysol spray. Then came the day I went "cleaning product" shopping - we were listing our house for sale, and I needed to collect a number of products to give the house both a good cleaning over and a little more daily maintenance. It was time to buy Oust.

I must say I was underwhelmed by the scent choices at my local Walmart - I guess I have been spoiled by other sprays that have a wide variety of scents. Only available in Floral, Outdoor, and Citrus scents. I ended up purchasing the mainly Outdoor scent because it was the ony scent I was even remotely interested in.

I brought it home, read the can, and placed my Oust Air Sanitizer in the basement.

From the website (though much of the info is on the can also):

"Oust Air Sanitizer is effective at killing airborne odor-causing bacteria in just about any part of the house you can think of. It's easy to use, works fast, and leaves no lingering fragrance.

Unlike other aerosol products, Oust Air Sanitizer doesn't merely hide unpleasant household smells with fragrance. Immediately after you spray Oust Air Sanitizer into a room, it attacks odor-causing bacteria, killing them in minutes and carrying them out of the air!"

We had recently painted the walls, floor, ripped up carpeting, and cleaned out all those nice areas my cats decided were better than the litter boxes.

I sprayed some Oust.

Yuck.

It didn't really smell good. Well, it didn't smell like Lysol - was I really thinking Lysol was a good scent? Well, to me, Lysol is distinctive, and reminds me of a "house is clean" feeling I get. And the scent didn't linger, it was more of an immediate scent that faded quickly - maybe that explains the claim of no lingering fragrance. Okay, maybe in using other products I am "masking" the odor some, but at least I don't smell cat stuff!

"Directions for Use:

To temporarily reduce airborne odor-causing bacteria and eliminate odors in an average-size room (12' x 12' x 9')

Close all doors, windows, and air vents.

Spray product upward in center of room for 10 seconds. For maximum effectiveness, relative humidity should be between 45% and 70%.

Resume normal room ventilation after spray has settled.
"

The Oust site gives a wide variety of information, including I noticed pointing out that Lysol is more a "surface" product, whereas Oust "attaches to airborne odor-causing bacteria".

Yeah.

All I know, is the Oust Air Sanitizer does not smell all that great to begin with. It does take the scent out of the air, sure enough. For an hour or so. I literally could walk into the basement an hour or so later and smell the same old smells. So surface, air borne attachment ... I just want the area I spray to smell better; quickly for a long period of time.

I will be finishing off my can of Oust Air Sanitizer - after all it's not so bad that it can't be used. But I do feel jipped. I do feel that the marketing on this one sucked me in. I don't feel this is an effective or even a remotely good product, nor one I would purchase again.

I'm sticking with Lysol.

Sorry Oust.
