| snsh's Full Review: GE 900 MHz Cordless Shop Phone w/Portable Recharge... |
I wanted a loud cordless phone for a grandma who refuses to wear a hearing aid. Phones for the hearing-impaired (such as Ameriphone-brand phones) are expensive. This GE phone is marketed as loud enough for shop floors. It retails for $80 in yellow (GE brand) or red (Sears brand). I found a yellow model on ebay for $10.
Features:
-bright yellow plastic
-900mhz cordless
-digital transmission
-separate transmitter base and charging base
-4-level adjustable voice volume
-high/low/off ringer volume
-call waiting caller-id display on handset
-2nd batterypack included
Good:
-loud enough for grandma
-handset stands erect on flat surfaces
-crud-resistant membrane buttons
-transmitter plugs into any power outlet near a phone jack
-handset not too heavy
-802.11a/b/g friendly
-several days standby battery life
-factory-matched handset and transmitter
Bad:
-ergonomically lousy handset shaped wrong for hands and shoulders
-membrane buttons hard to press
-transmitter too large to neatly plug into a power strip
-large charging base consumes table space
-unimpressive cordless range
-obtrusive belt clip cannot be removed
-high retail cost
Conclusion:
Grandma is thrilled because she can now hear well enough to use the phone. She likes it enough that she does not mind having to use a pencil to press the buttons. She is also happy that when not in use, the phone gets left perched on the coffee table, easy to see from across the room, instead of dropped between cushions on the couch. Overall, I recommend it highly for both the hearing-impaired and the scatterbrained. For others, your money is better spent on a 5.8Ghz phone that has a more compact handset and a greater range.
