The Bottom Line Driving is a complex skill that takes concentration.
Distractions can kill.
Becoming a good driver takes time and practice. To Become proficient, we need exposure to all sorts of situations. Nothing comes to us overnight. However, you can become a better driver instantly by not doing any of the following. The simple chore of driving to work, driving to the mall, driving for pleasure or business is becoming more challenging every day. Traffic in most major cities and thoroughfares is tough enough to navigate without undue distractions. Here is my "hit-list" of things to avoid doing while trying to keep your vehicle on the road. So many accidents and fender-benders could be totally avoided by paying attention to the not-so-simple task at hand - DRIVING. 1- Stay off the cellphone. No ifs, ands or buts ! Hang it up and keep it that way or the next call you make may be to 911 or roadside assistance to haul your backside out of a ditch. (or maybe help that poor slob you just ran off the road while chatting away !) 2- Ladies, put your make-up on at home or at your destination. You are all beautiful and the end result of applying finishing touches in a moving vehicle may require more than make-up. Gentlemen, even though you have that adaptor for the electric shaver, I don’t think it was intended to be used going 80 MPH while weaving in and out Of traffic. Why not try it with a straight razor ? 3- Keep your dog in the back seat. Sitting on your lap is fine at home. It's even cute when they hang out of the rear window, the wind blowing in their face. You can almost see them smiling. Well keep them in rear and not on your lap. I'm sure Fido will be just as happy and you won't have fur flying in your face while going around that curve. 4- Lovers, young and old alike, we all know your needs and desires but can't you wait until the vehicle stops moving. Keep your hands off of each other and on the wheel or the results could be "anti-climactic". 5- Parents. It's wonderful to see your child all buckled up for safety. What's not wonderful is watching you turn around to talk to or coo at them. If you want your tyke to keep growing, pay attention to them at home. Make them safe and comfortable in your vehicle then pay attention to driving. 6- Hungry ? Pull over anywhere and have yourself a quick snack. Don't munch on the run. Ever spill hot coffee on your lap ? Makes you jump doesn't it ? Ever try jumping in your seat while doing 70 on the Interstate ? Not a pretty sight. Eating/drinking while operating your vehicle may very well lead to your "last supper". 7- Catch up on your reading somewhere else. I'm totally shocked at the amount of people I've seen reading the paper, magazine or book while crawling along in traffic only to be startled at seeing it move and jump to catch up (I've even been bumped in the rear by one of these jokers). Read in the library, or at home, not on the road. 8- Animated, hand-waving, head-nodding conversations or arguments should be postponed or be held elsewhere. A moving vehicle should not be mistaken for a podium. Why do you have to look at your passenger in order to convey a thought ? The road is in front of you, not on the passenger side of the vehicle ! Talk all you want, but the theatrics and physical gyrations have to stop or the speech you're giving could turn into a eulogy. Fighting traffic is bad enough without having to worry about being run off the road, sideswiped or getting dinged by someone who is not paying attention to the job at hand. All you have to do is think about this: Would you want you your son or daughter to be doing any of these things while they are driving ? I don’t think so. So, why should you ??????? |
