I've Never Been So Surprised!

The Bottom Line If you are planning on proposing, make it a total surprise for the person you are proposing to, it is so much more exciting that way.

Last Christmas Eve will probably be the most memorable of my life. It was the night my boyfriend proposed to me. Everyone was surprised. He was considered to be the type who will never settle down, they were wrong.

Christmas time was approaching and I was stressing out about whether or not we would have enough money or if we had gotten all that we need to for all of those on our list. It was our second year together and I wan't expecting anything big nor had I planned on going overboard on his gift. I figured we had all year to spend money on each other.

A few days before Christmas, I received a call from my boyfriend's aunt that lives in Connecticut and his grandmother who lives in Canada. They told me they had decided last minute to spend Christmas with us and asked if it was okay. I was a little thrown back but was looking forward to seeing them again. The next thing I know the whole family was making arrangements to get together on Christmas Eve which was even more surprising because usually we met up with each other a few days after when things have died down a bit. Still I didn't think anything was up, just that I'd have more work to do to prepare for them all.

On Christmas Eve, the family all gathered together, we exchanged our gifts and everything went smoothly. I expected that after a few hours together everyone would head home and I could start cleaning up but everyone stayed. It was now after midnight and I was tired and no one had left yet. I didn't want to kick them out but could not understand why they were still there.

My boyfriend then asked me if I wanted to ride to the store with him, I was so happy to get a break that I said yes and told our guests we would be back soon, they all said they would be here when we got back. Now I was starting to think something was a little strange. On the way back from the store, my boyfriend asked me to get him something from the glove box and when I opened it there was a small box, beautifully giftwrapped sitting in there. Even after I saw the box, I never thought an engagement ring, maybe earrings or a birthstone ring.

When I took the box out, he calmly said, oh yeah, I forgot to bring that present into the house. He pulled over to the side of the road and waited for me to open it. When I did, I was so shocked to see a gorgeous diamond solitare. He then asked me to spend my life with him, he didn't get down on one knee though because it would have been kind of difficult in the car. I said yes, with tears streaming down my face. Definitely tears of joy and happiness. He then explained to me that he had let it slip out that he was going to propose to me tonight and the family wanted to be there. He had intended to do it in front of them all but chickened out the last minute and thought in private would be more appropriate.

We got home and as soon as everyone saw the ring, they started to head home, Thank God! They are such busybodies anyway! They just wanted to be the first to see it. It definitely was a night to remember and although there were no flowers and dinner or moonlight stroll, it was the most romantic thing anyone has ever done for me. I will remember it fondly forever, or at least until we break up. :)
