This one is the little brother to my big Epson 2200. In fact, when I purchased it, I hadn't even ordered my computer system yet. When it comes down to print quality, this little printer can really do the job. It goes to 5760 X 1440 dpi on the resolution and will print a panoramic print 8 1/2 X 44 inches, or as long as you want to make it if you correctly stitch the images together. It can do duplex printing [printing on both sides of the paper] and it prints lables for both CD and DVD discs as well as inserts. You have a choice of using printable CD and DVD discs or putting a blank label on the disc, putting the disc in the special holder that comes with the printer, and then printing your label. The great thing about this little printer is, like the 2200, your ink cartridges are available on an individual basis. You never have to use up one color and then throw away the whole color cartridge away when there are still other colors in the cartridge like on some tri-color ink cartridges. When you run out of Light Magenta or Light Cyan, that is the color cartridge you buy. The ink cartridges run just under $11.00, depending on where you purchase them, and a lot of times you can find great deals on eBay. I have seen a complete 10-pack set of OEM [Original Equipment Manufactured] ink cartridges for $60.00 plus shipping. That's not bad at all.
It is also a fact that, if one wants to invest in it, a continuous bulk inking system is available for the printer. I would choose wisely and be very careful about a continuous inking system.
You can also use other brands of paper with this printer. From roll paper to individual sheets up to 8 1/2 X 14, as well as photographic dimensions, card stock, greeting cards, envelopes, labels, transparency sheets, iron-on sheets, all can be used with this printer and the results are excellent. I paid $179.00 for this little printer when I purchased it in May, 2004. I have seen it on sale for $149.95. Paint Shop Pro and Adobe Photoshop work extremely well with this printer and one more great thing about the handy little device is that you don't even have to have it hooked up to a PC to print a photographic image. If your digital camera uses CompactFlash or Microdrive cards, MemoryStick, SD [Secure Digital], or MMC [MultiMediaCard], or SmartMedia or xD Picture Cards, YOU CAN PRINT YOUR PHOTOGRAPHIC IMAGES without a PC. USB or PictBridge for your digital camera hookup is conveniently located on the front bottom-right of the printer. Your memory card reader is also located on the front right side inside a little door that you open to insert the card.
Now for $50.00 more, one can purchase the R300M which is the exact same printer but also comes with a little LCD color monitor that attaches to the upper top right of the printer. This little monitor is not available for the R300. You have to purchase the R300M to have this feature. This is an excellent way to monitor your color printing of photographs.
