Children of the Night

The Bottom Line These are all very entertaining movies that span over many generations. These would be great to get for Halloween or anytime you want to get spooked!

This week a movie that I had been anxiously waiting for came out on video, "Shadow of a Vampire". The movie was great and really got me thinking about the best vampire movies I have ever seen. I have seen alot of very stupid vampire movies and I have seen a few that were pretty spooky. I have some of both on my list. Personally, I mostly like the scary ones, because that is usually the main point of vampire movies, right? Ok, here goes......

10) Near Dark
A farmer boy meets a pretty girl, who just happens to really be a pretty blood-sucking vampire. He ends up with a gang of wild vampires traveling the west in a big van. This movie has some pretty gory scenes, but also has a bit of humor.

9) Blade
The world is full of vampires (we just don't know they are vampires) and humans are just their food source, but never fear, Blade is here! Blade is the mighty fighter of the undead, a half vampire himself, avenging the death of his mother who died at the hands (or should I say teeth) of a vampire. His mother was bitten while pregnant with Blade and that is how he became part vampire. There are some pretty cool special effects in this one!

8)Salem's Lot
Now, this was a TV miniseries, but I HAVE to count it because it is the first Vampire "movie" I remember seeing (and it scared my socks off!). A writer returns to his home and at the same time a strange antique dealer moves into a spooky house in town. Strange deaths start occurring and the writer must help save his town form the ultimate evil. Based on a Stephen King novel.

7)Buffy the Vampire Slayer
Ok, before you laugh at me, look at my reasoning: It is an entertaining movie about Vampires. Dracula it ain't, but they can't all be Dracula. Buffy goes from being a popular high school girl to learning about her destiny as a vampire slayer. You have to watch this movie tongue-in-cheek, but when you do you'll see that it is like totally awesome!

6)The Lost Boys
When two boys and their mother moved to California their lives were supposed to get better. Unfortunately the older brother decides to fall in with the wrong crowd (a crowd of vampires that is) and needs his little brother to help him get out of trouble. This is a pretty fun movie, scary in some parts, humorous in others.

5)Interview With a Vampire
A reluctant vampire tells a reporter his sorrowful story of how he was changed into a creature of the night. This is a film that shows the sensuous side of vampirism as well as the brutal. Also sports a great all star cast.

4)Dracula
This is THE Dracula. The one starring Bela Lugosi as the bloodthirsty count. The movie is based on Bram Stoker's novel and endures as a film classic.

3)Bram Stoker's Dracula
This film is dazzling to the eye with it's beautiful scenery and a costumes. This Dracula is a guy you can actually feel some sympathy for, in his sorrow over his lost love. There are some really terrific special effects in this film. Directed by Francis Ford Coppola.

2)Shadow of a Vampire
See, I told you I thought this one was great! This movie is about the making of the 1922 film Nosfertu. Director F.W. Murnau is making what he hopes will be the most frightening vampire film ever made. The film has become his obsession and he sets out to cast the creepiest "Orlack" he can find. This is based on Bram Stoker's Dracula, but they had to change the name because Bram Stoker's widow refused to sell them the rights to the story. This movie has dark humor and lots of creepiness as you wonder...is the actor Max Schreck a real actor or is he a......vampire? Ooooh very creepy! Watch this one prior to my #1 vampire movie to double the chills!

1)Nosferatu
This is probably one creepiest vampire movies ever made (and will be more so after you watch Shadow of a Vampire). This is a black and white film with English subtitles. You feel that this movie may actually have a real vampire on film....and again, if you watch "Shadow" first you will really wonder. This may be hard to find on video. I have seen this on the AMC channel before.

If you see ANY movies on this list...please, please, please see #2 and #1 back to back. When you watch #1, make sure the house is dark and the only light you see is the erie light from the TV. It can be pretty spooky!
