| libera's Full Review: Apple Power Macintosh G4 Multimedia |
I have worked with this computer at work enough to be able to accuratley rate it. First things first, the RISC processors that MAC's use are fast. Most people know that you cannot compare RISC processors to x86 processors mhz for mgh because of the different architecture but I would say that the G4 is easily as fast as a pIII 800.
The pros of this computer are its capabilities with high end graphics and design software. The G4 blazes on apps like FormZ, Photoshop, and Quark. The Mac OS is also one of the most stable platforms out there. It is easy to use and its graphical interface is still better than anything from Microsoft. Unfortunatley this is where the pros end and the cons begin.
First, the lack of software. I wont go into too much detail about this as it is a widley known issue. Suffice it to say that there is a lot more stuff available out there for the PC. Second, the price. Pound for pound PC's still cost about a third to galf as much as a similarly configured Mac. Third, and most important, expandabiltiy. If you want the best in current graphics cards out there whether consumer grade or high-end OpenGL models, you are out of luck. Monitor compatibility is still an issue though less than it has been in the past (nVidia announce a Mac capable card but it has yet to be released).
For those Macophiles out there this review will be meaningless as they are, as a group, unswayable. If you are not wed to either the PC or the Mac platform I have to say that all in all I think the PC is the better option. Hey, this is a very good, well designes, high performace computer, but unless you are upgrading an exsisting Mac system there isnt a really compelling reason to start with mac now.
