All very helpful!

Although I've been a member for ages, I think I have only averaged one review a year, and not really ever bothered with the WOT. Sad, I know. I think it is about time to start!

Thanks for all the information!

Although I'm not technically new to epinions, I have not written many reviews. I also haven't used the WOT or WOD since I wasn't sure exactly what it was meant for. This article helped me to determine how to use those areas, along with some good pointers.
Thanks so much for the information!

The Mystery Unraveled (Reply to this comment)
by slau_parker
I'd been wondering for awhile why, if a review I'd written received, say, 5 VH's and 2 H's, the overall rating came up as H. You answered me question in a review. I'd given up, as I'd asked several people (including editors and top reviewers) and no one was able to give me a straight answer.

Cogent, clear, intelligent points.... (Reply to this comment)
by NFP
...well presented.

In the end, a WOT is what you make it. Personally I have found that keeping mine tight allows me to have the time to interact meaningfully with the people and topic areas who are the most interesting to me, and those who presumably find me and my areas of interest to be most worthwhile.

That means I manage my time with them differently, and give just a little more back to them -- more comments, perhaps, or re-reading more than once before rating and commenting, or even private e-mails on a variety of topics of mutual interest.

I do value a lot of people who are not in my WOT. More people "trust" me than I "trust." I do read and rate many who are not in my WOT, and sometimes comment.

But there's only so muich time, and choices have to be made. The WOT makes it easier for me to prioritize, and increases my enjoyment of the site....and hopefully theirs as well.

Good post.

Thank You So Much (Reply to this comment)

I can't thank you enough for this essay. As a newcomer the intricacies and protocol of this community have seemed a little daunting at times. Here you answer precisely many of the questions that had been nagging away at me. I feel a lot more informed and even encouraged now. And I eagerly anticipate reading, learning from and implementing your 'Building Your WOT' advice.
Thanks again.

thanks for the fine article, it was really well written

Long reivew, and very thorough... I think you succeeded at explaining some of the mystery behind the WoT. :)

arianej

Note to jnsbray: I don't know if I'm one of the people who commented on your spelling. It's possible. I don't harp on it, but spelling, proper grammar, etc. IS an important part of writing, because it has to do with readability and presentation...as well as credibility. I know many people don't like understand why and/or don't like it, but it's a legitimate critique if it gets in the way of reading your reviews.

If you're getting a significant amount of complaints about your spelling, I wouldn't just ignore them or think the people who left them have no life. I'd listen. Chances are, they're trying to help you by pointing out a way you could improve, and not trying to be mean.

You did a great (Reply to this comment)
by jo.com
job on this. Personally I ONLY put people on my wot who I trust. They review products I would buy or not buy. That isn't to say I always agree. Phineaskc (Pamela) loves Slim-Fast juice shakes, I hate them..I still trust her, though. In the beginning I put the wrong people on my wot, i.e. people who were popular for other than writing great reviews I trusted reasons. Anyway, don't want to write my own editorial here :) jo

I think that the term WOD or web of distrust is out of date. It is now a block list.

Advisors only carry more weight in their own category! This is one of the most misunderstood facts.

If an advisor in books gives your book opinion a rating it carries about three times the normal weight. For example a H rating will count as three H ratings (last time I checked). So if you post a music review and a advisor in electronics gives you a SH rating, it is basically a rating like one given by any other member.

Don't forget that the web of trust affects how members see epinions.com

when you search for advice on the site, your trust list members rise to the top and can even out rank an advisor, I noticed that when I was looking for info not too long ago.

On "trust sluts," the strangest thing happened to me (Reply to this comment)
by lorendiac
Not long ago, I logged on one day and saw a new name on the list of people who "Trusted" me. I recognized the name immediately, because just the day before I had read and rated two of his opinions for the first time. I was somewhat touched at the thought that within 24 hours he had noticed he had a new visitor, had checked out some of my own work, and had been sufficiently impressed to add me to his WOT, which I took to mean he looked forward to reading more of my opinions in the future.

I shouldn't have been touched at all. You see, in checking on the lists of who had rated my most recent opinions, I couldn't find his name. I looked and looked, but it wasn't there. My new conclusion was this it went like this: He looked at one of his recent opinions, he noticed a particular person (yours truly!) had rated him for the first time, and he immediately decided to add that new face to his WOT in hopes that good old lorendiac would be grateful enough to keep visiting his opinions in the future, and perhaps even add him to the WOT in a reciprocal relationship. It did not, however, occur to him to read any of lorendiac's pieces before clicking on "Trust."

If he thinks that just saying he "trusts" me is going to get him any special treatment, he's sadly mistaken. How many people theoretically "trust" me is a very trivial thing; it's the people who actually read and rated my last couple of opinions that are near and dear to my heart! I've had people rate a couple of my things, "trust" me, and never be heard from again, but this was the first time I noticed I'd been trusted by someone who was too lazy to read anything of mine at all. Just when I thought I had seen it all . . .

I've been on this site for almost a year and am just starting to get a larger WOT. I hate to just write because I have to. Everyone is telling me to write one every other day! Yikes! I do rate the "Just Ins" faithfully, tho and I think that helps. This review was thorough and concise. A great help. Thanks. Louisa

Hi there

Don't let this epinions thing get you down, I have been a newbie for 2 days, and allot of people are in it for the money... I am in it for the help and advice, and also that I may help someone else...

If you are not sure about the web of trust thing, don't bother with it right now.

I do have 4 on my WOT, and I feel comfortable with what they have to say... Check those that respond to your articles out in there profiles until you feel like you can trust them...

If there is someone that you like what they have to say, read more of there writings...

You can e-mail me if there is anything I can help you with, and we will learn this thing together!!!

I am a NEWBIE. A 24 hour newbie to be exact, and your piece was an inspiration to me, drastically!!!

I became very disheartened when I started to get commented on my spelling more so than my topic itself.

I have written maybe a dozen or so pieces, that I received "Very Helpful" ratings, and as I read the comments, it made me feel good, that I may have made a difference for someone.

Then, WHAM!!! I was getting slammed saying that I need to proof read, and spell check better!!! Talk about a sinking heart. I was so discouraged that I told my husband that I would not return to that site again..

He convinced me to continue... He said that if just 1 person benefits from a situation that I may have been in, or some advice I share, then I did 1 good thing, and that is what counts.

As far as my WOT, WOD, I'm still reviewing things there. I do have a couple of people that are on my WOT. But I do not want to move to quickly...

My ADVICE to those that are on here to be a critic on spelling/proof reading. You have WAY to much TIME on your hands!!! Find something else to do, because I am staying right where I am, and if you have nothing better to be critics about, then you do not have to read my topics.

I read to better myself, and I take to heart what people have to say relating to my situations...
Whether the topic be about children, or buying a boat. It doesn't matter!!!

A good critic will read a story, comment, on articles from the heart! Not just to push a button of whether it is not helpful to very helpful. You have to feel from your soul the situation that everyday people go through...

If you do not understand the topic, ask someone! Don't just push a button to express yourself, realize why you chose the answer you did... Not just to be a spell checker, but to be human.

Spelling is a mistake that can be corrected along life's way... A person makes mistakes because they are human, not something that needs to be taken out and corrected...

(WOT - web of trust, WOD - web of distrust) This is for those that does not know what WOT & WOD means.
