You are absolutely right! I usually check who is rating my reviews. When I see a name that keeps popping up on a lot of my reviews, I go and check out their reviews - it works! And, since you are such an awesome writer, welcome to my WOT! Thanks again!

I was just checking out who had reviewed some of my stuff, and came across your homepage here. Thought it was pretty cool.

This article was very interesting to me seeing as that I am quite the newbie to this site.
I'll have to check out some more of your writing as it seems quite well done.

I know that this is an older review, but it's been a great help! I am new to Epinions and have wondered exactly how to go about gaining a WOT! Thank you for all your advice!

what I needed to read to satisfy my own gut feelings of reading others, rating others, and carefully trusting others. I feel so unloved! My writing definately needs work though but unfortuntately, when my ratings are less than "very helpful", the reader rating me leaves me NO comments or direction. Very disappointing. Excellent article here.

Such good information in this tutorial...now if I can only figure out how on earth to write editorials. So much to learn about the 'inner workings' of ePinions!! :) Thank you!

I particularly like the way you seperated the moves into three steps - the first one is a one I think I need to concentrate on most. I'm trying to improve my reviewing style, and to make it a bit more original.

Thanks for an excellent piece about a topic that -- yeah, okay, i admit it -- concerns me. (I agree that "being a good writer is itself a service", but our excuse for lusting after popularity is that more readers are more helped that fewer, as you also seem to grant). Your piece is, according to its own advice, bound to increase your own Web of Trust, but self-referential truths have never bothered me.

I'm surprised, incidentally, that you have found it "unusual" to surf for your favorite books and albums to see who's reviewed them; it was the first method i turned to. Anyway, i agree, it works well. I hope you'll keep busy writing here!

cheers, - Brian

To the author of this article:

You think only six in a few months is bad? I've been on epinions for over a year and STILL don't have anyone who trusts me! LOL. All of my reviews are either Helpful or Very Helpful, so I'm not sure what it is. I just allowed my real name to be posted online here, so maybe that will help out.

I'm beginning to get frustrated with the entire idea, and feel like giving it up. (the web of trust). Any suggestions?

“I like and respect this person; I enjoy their writing and feel that they’re a valuable member of Epinions. Their reviews are consistently informative and give good advice.” So far you are passing this test in my mind. You are under very consideration on my WOT. Thanks for the advice!

I just want you to know that you did a truly tremendous job with this review. I knew a few things that you mentioned, but I was totally astounded by others. I will try to put all your advice to work, and I hope it works. Thank you so much for letting me in on all those helpful tips. Aside from this opinion, I love all your others. I've added you to my WOT, and I think you are way too modest. You're a wonderful writer and a wonderful addition to the epinions community. Thanks for everything.

...ensnared in your 'web of trust'.

I have been searching for that first one to trust, but I want it to be special and I certainly don't want to feel that I gave it away to someone who did not deserve it. So I have to go find at least 5 more reviews/posts by you...or some other lucky soul...:-)

Glad to find a talented writer who made it across the great chasm of epinions.com

Excellent article! I've read lots of editorials on expanding your WOT. This is the first won that I've read with advice I can actually use.

As a relatively new epinionator (only 6 reviews so far) I've got exactly 2 trusters! He that's better than I did in High School! Just kidding.

You didn't mention the value of being a prolific writer. Yes, with only six reviews I've been a slacker, but I really spend some time on my reviews. I'm going for quality not quantity.

In terms of increasing your WOT, how important is it to write a lot of reviews?

Well done! Thanks for the tips, been trying to improve my WOT too, so we'll see. I haven't written any editorials, but it might be the time to start them huh?

BTW, I almost fell off my chair when you mention "ptiemann" fame!

Hey you! (Reply to this comment)
by slau_parker
I'm such a perfectionist, I get upset if someone rates my reviews merely "helpful". =) Oh, and I'm new. Between trying to write brilliant reviews, mothering twin babies and a freaking slow laptop, I probably won't get to implement your advice to do all that reading, so I'm not expecting to be popular anytime soon. The only reason I would put more effort into this is if it started earning me bigger bucks. (Oh, the irony). But I appreciated your editorial because it stood out from several others that I also read. You have a detailed but conversational style that was easy to follow, and you went beyond some of the other editorials I read on this topic.

Thanks,
Sarah

Good lord. I've only read a few articles in this section, but I can't even conceive of one being more helpful than this masterful bit.

To say that this is kind of helpful, is like saying that ole' Edgar Allen was kind of eloquent.
"Mine eyes have seen the light!".

Ok, I'm going a bit overboard, considering that in my heart, I had most of this figured out already. Bravo, however, for putting pen to paper on this little gem.

Best regards,

DrJ

I'm not whoring to get on your WOT, honest (Reply to this comment)
by brabinger
However, I am grateful for your excellent comments on how to use epinions. I'm a newbie here (about a week old epionionator--I've barely started teething yet), and I appreciated your straightforward advice, so much so that I've printed out and saved several of them. I got to your space by checking out who visited mine. You rated a couple of my opinions highly, but more importantly, you gave a low rating to the one on which I did the crappiest job. Thanks for calling my bluff.

I'll keep looking out for your opinions, especially any other helpful guidelines you wish to share on this web site. BTW, I'm particularly impressed that you're so young. It's rare these days to find teens with an outlook as mature as yours.

...as always.

Thanks so much for the compliment. I do appreciate it. I'm so sorry it's taken me so long to read and rate your review. I've been without a computer for several weeks and I'm just now getting to the back log of epinion alerts.

Keep writing!

The author's profile indicated that they were 14 or so years old. Wow, impressive writing for somebody of that age. Some well thought out ideas and writing that, sadly, eclipse the writing skills of many a college student.

Some of us desire to be great writers and claim epinions to be our sounding board of hope. I, I am a great writer in my own right. I believe in the true artifact. You write well, they read well. I sense your inclusion in this theory but as you, I, have an understanding of this 'crowd of expressions' website. People want to write to become famous, well known, rich, satisfied blah blah blah. But, after a few solid articles drawing nada, they wonder...Am I a bit too shallow? Or is there a trick to this game? Is my ‘artifactual ideology’ becoming artificial? I don't know. You cleared the path of "what’s really going on" and I request an encore for that. But, I might have let them find the true meaning of success in a greater search of their own capabilities. Heck finding the key to success is most of the success.

I usually don't read the epinions editorial topics for the simple reason I'm sick to death of all the "whiners".

Thanks for printing a commentary that was actually USEFUL!
