I heard about Lillian Vernon when I was shopping around for gifts for my bridesmaids. I wanted to get some personalized tote bags that could be used as carry-on baggage, and I would put their bridesmaid gifts inside. I thought this was appropriate, since they were all flying to England for my wedding.
In any case, I heard about them, and decided to take a look at their website.
The website itself is very easy to navigate, offering a great search engine. I had no trouble finding what I was looking for.
Lo and behold, they had what looked like very nice black leather tote bags. I had originally been planning to get the LL Bean Zip totes, but decided on these, as they were about the same cost, but leather, and also personalized!
I entered in all of my information, monogramming information, and then waited for them to arrive. When they finally came, I was so excited to see what they'd look like- I had spend a lot of time and money making and buying gifts for my friends, and it was important to me that the bag they were presented in was quality.
Needless to say, I was VERY disappointed. They say the bags were leather, but they were such poor quality leather they felt like vinyl. I've felt vinyl/pleather/etc. that was more leather-like, or inspired by leather than this material, which was supposedly real leather. As for the monogramming, it was not done directly onto the bag, but rather done on a separate leather oval, using spray paint or some such thing, and then GLUED onto the bag. Some of the 4 bags I ordered had the monogrammed oval already peeling off.
I was very disappointed, and called customer service to complain.
The person I spoke to on the other end of the phone barely spoke English. Outsourcing of jobs is a pet-peeve of mine to begin with, but if you are an "American" company, then please do make sure your customer representitives can speak the language, won't you?
The woman I spoke to was very nice, but the language gap made it a very long process. In the end I was able to return the goods for a refund.
Overall, I was very disappointed with this store. I know that other people have had good experiences with them, but this was my first and will certainly be my last. As for the site itself- it's great, very well done, easy to navigate and use.
But a great site doesn't mean much if the goods are shoddy and the customer service cannot actually communicate with its customers. Even though I know that others have had a good experience with this company, after the very poor quality goods I recieved I won't be going back. One star for this company, and that is for having a good site, and not giving me too much of a hassle about returning the heinous product they had sent.
Oh- and in the end, if you're looking for Tote bags- I got the LL Bean Boat and Tote in a medium- they were excellent!
