Hey Paul,
Thank you so much for compliments. That was very kind of you.
You really should try to get to the city as often as possible. I find myself driven to go more and more these days. Every time I go my list grows as to what else I want to see.
Thanks again,
Phil

Great Job, Phil (Reply to this comment)

You do a great job of capturing the atmosphere and ambience of Little Italy and in you other reviews, the real essence of the NY metro area.
I'm originally from LI and now live in Rockaway, NJ (Morris County) and have come to realize after reading your reviews here, that I don't get into NYC anywhere near enough.
Thanks for all of the great postings here at epinions.
Cheers,

Hey Patricia,
It's actually a copy I have. It's cool that if a relative came in through Ellis Island, the information is easily retrieved by punching in the names or near spelling. On line you can see the manifest in its original hand and they even have a picture of the ships people came over in. You can then pay for hard copies. They have it set up so you cannot print it out at home from the PC. I found the process fascinating that I could keep talking about it tell you other small but interesting things I found out through the research.
Thanks for your comments and also for that MH review of your home town.

That is neat that you have the original manifest showing the trip your grandfather made. I like reading about my ancestors lives and would love to have something like that in my possession.
Wonderful review of Little Italy, I enjoyed reading it. I also love Italian food so this place would be my downfall!

No, I haven't been to either place location even though I have been in both cities. That is good information though and I'll keep it in mind. Mmm, I have a gig in Massachusetts this Friday. I'll have to see if it's in Boston, many are. If so it may be the perfect opportunity to check one out.
Thanks for stopping by and commenting.

An excellent review, as always. Have you spent anytime in the North End of Boston or Federal Hill in Providence? While somewhat diminished, they still have lots of Italian heritage, and both are considerably larger.

Hey Ed,
I would love to hear those stories one day. Perhaps at another M&G somewhere. It would be a good excuse for you to visit NY if they ever decide to have another one here. I could always give you a place to stay for a couple of days in our active home.
Thanks for taking the time to check out this review.

Fond memories . . . (Reply to this comment)

This brought back memories of walking through the San Genaro Festival and some of my favorite Italian "Family" restaurants. Talk about Gangsta Rap! I was a waiter at one of them for about 8 months and the stories I could tell about that place.

Hey Barbara, You are right about Little Italy shrinking. It's not nearly as large an area as it was twenty years ago. The area is now trying to take steps to keep alive with mixed results.
Too bad about the Tenement Museum. In taking the tour one can't help but see the many parallels that the Jewish and Italian communities had in common when first coming into the US. Actually they still do have much in common especially when it comes to loving family and food! I have noted in some of my links that you must get to the museum early. I believe you can also reserve on-line.
Thanks for reading, rating and commenting.

to be shrinking, the area I mean..We just skirted it when we were on our way to Orchard street and got a little lost..Hester street was where my father used to live at one time but back then it was more of the Jewish area, I guess they all overlap now..I'm so sorry I didn't get a chance to see the tenement museum but we couldn't get reservations for the day we went down there. But, we did get to Katz's deli...Review to come :)
My husband found himself at the San Generro (sp?) festival the weekend before I arrived..He called me while he was eating a sausage and pepper sandwich..I was so jealous..LOL
Loved your review

Little Italy sure is a great place. Ha, good point about Gotti. I forgot he died while in the slammer a couple-a-years ago.
Thanks for stopping by.
