You're still being billed for long distance?

Written: Apr 03 '01 (Updated Apr 03 '01)
Pros:You can keep in touch with out of town friends and relatives.
Cons:The costs vary so much!
The Bottom Line: The phone cards are so much cheaper than having a long distance carrier on your phone line.

Disbeliefs

I can't believe that with the low cost of prepaid phone cards anyone would still be using a long distance company for their phone charges. Awhile back I bought a prepaid phone card at Sam's Club for 5.9 cents per minute. After purchasing the phone card I never used long distance on my phone again. But, I was still being charged up to $5 a month by a long distance carrier. That was just to have access to long distance. I immediately cancelled my long distance carrier and will only use the prepaid phone cards.

Advantages

The advantages to the prepaid phone card are many. The number one advantage is the price. It is a straight per minute price that you pay upfront. I currently can get the prepaid phone card for 4.16 cents per minute. This is the price I pay per minute for all long distance phone calls I make. I can call day or night. I can call during the week or on the weekends. It doesn't change the rate. And, my very favorite thing about the phone card is that the rate is the same for in state long distance. Most of my long distance calls are within my state and the good rates most long distance carriers offer are for state to state calls.

Another big advantage to the phone card is you can use it anywhere. I have my card number memorized now so I can use it from any phone. You can always keep the same card because you can recharge the minute by simply calling a toll free number.

Disadvantages

There are only two disadvantages I can think of about the phone card. The first one is there is a surcharge if you use it from a pay phone. I only use mine at home so I don't know this charge. The other disadvantage would be how many numbers you have to dial to make a call. You have to dial a toll free number, then enter your card number, then enter the number you want to call.

All in all...

I have to say this is an excellent value. I love using my card. I have saved tons of money on long distance. I highly recommend looking for one of these phone cards. I know the cheapest rates are at the wholesale clubs like Sam's Club or Costco!

Now, go get a phone card and catch up with an old friend you haven't "talked" to in forever!
