When booking my last stay in Las Vegas, I made a mistake between the air travel and hotel stay. That is, I booked my hotel for a Sunday check-out but didn't fly home until Monday morning. Fortunately, a friend was staying the entire week at the Jockey Club and they were leaving a day early. So, I slipped in after they left, stayed the night, and checked out for them.
This is not how I recommend traveling, but can certainly recommend the Jockey Club to anyone. As a point of reference I booked the Stratosphere first, for $45 per night, through Travelocity's online service. Once I found the new arrangement, I found that cancellation was a fifty dollar fee. Nonetheless, the customer service rep at Travelocity was excellent, and she canceled the room with no charge. Cool. More poker money for me!
Getting there
I left the north strip and took a cab for about fifteen bucks. Be certain the driver gets the name right, as it may be mistaken for the Polo Club.
Checking in
Checking in was uneventful. My experience won't be typical, but every visitor will be met with indifference. In my case, I wanted to bring my luggage over the night before my friends left to simplify the process. I asked for their room and the desk clerk had some trouble with the telephones that we joked about. Bringing an extra set of luggage in was no problem. The next day I simply walked past the desk with only an overnight bag (the biggest reason to bring the luggage earlier) without a second glance from the desk.
There are two elevators, side-by-side, that are always available and cover the eleven floors quickly. A sign noted that they are undergoing renovations and the hallways look good and the construction was unobtrusive.
The room and the evening
The room is great! It is a studio apartment with a fully equipped little kitchen, large living room, eat-in dinette area, large bedroom, walk-in closet, and small, but adequate bathroom.
For travelers, here's a rundown of the kitchen so you can plan accordingly. A small modern refrigerator will hold everything you need for a week. There is plenty of cabinet space for storage, a good collection of plates, cups, dishes, pots, pans, etc. You will find can-openers, vegetable peelers, silverware, and the like, as well. The stovetop and oven is small, but big enough. You also have a microwave and coffee maker.
In the living room there is a sleeper sofa, a few stuffed chairs, and a coffee table. The television is big with a multi-function remote that also controls the stereo system. There is a VCR and the television is connected to cable channels.
The bedroom I had featured a king-sized bed with a few nightstands and a taller dresser, along with an alarm clock. The mattress was hard, but there were plenty of pillows and blankets and climate-control was simple.
The bathroom was small and could stand an upgrade, but everything was functioning. The shower worked well, a hair dryer was available, plenty of soaps, shampoos, and power outlets.
You will find plenty of space for clothes in the lighted walk-in closet, too.
Staying with the theme, everything was in a horse-based motif.
The dominant feature was the view, as my room overlooked Bellagio's famous fountains. Every fifteen minutes the water display danced. I could open the window and faintly hear the accompanying music, but it was not loud enough to disturb even a light sleeper. The light show may, but the thick curtains blocked it completely. I recommend that given the choice, you pick the side overlooking the fountain, rather than the parking lot.
The hotel itself is a little noisy with people coming and going, but didn't bother me one bit.
The strip
Location, location, location is without a doubt the strength of this place. It is a short walk to a number of excellent casinos and other venues. Because of the location, there are many people out and about and I saw some amazing street performers including someone with an iguana.
The huge Bellagio's resort is next door, as well as Bally's, Ceasar's Palace, Barbary Coast, and the Venetian.
Getting out
There is no cab stand, so if you are just going out for the evening, I recommend walking over to a nearby hotel. When checking out, though, call ahead since you will be loaded down with bags.
The McCarran International Airport is only 2.5 miles away, which is about an eight minute drive. There are shuttle services available, but the make a series of intermediate stops and add a lot of time to the trip. The best bet is to save time, spend a little more, and take a cab.
Just the facts
270 guest rooms
Business facilities
Pool, spa, health club
Plenty of parking
Gift shop
Two lighted tennis courts
Cocktail lounge
On-site you will find the Al Amir Mediterranean, open for breakfast and lunch. There are plenty of local restaurants nearby, including Mexican, American, Italian, French, and Chinese, among others.
The bottom line is that this is a great location to enjoy the best of Las Vegas.
