The Bottom Line Start with a 4X2 and work your way up.

I own a Ford Ranger XLT and before that a Toyota 4X2. But what are the real costs after buying a truck?

Kiss the weekend goodbye
You'll start hearing phrases like "Can you help me move this weekend?" and "I need to get some lumber, but it won't fit in my Geo, what are you doing after work?" and my all-time favorite, "Oh, well I just ASSUMED we could use your truck."

Yes, having a truck will make you very popular indeed. So popular in fact that you forget why you bought one in the first place. But that is why we buy trucks.

Pile on in
Trucks are great for drive-in movies. Of course as the owner of the truck you will be the one ferrying everyone to the drive-in and get stuck paying the $5 or so to get in not to mention spending the next day CLEANING out the back of the truck and giving it a good washing. But that is why we buy trucks.

Pile it in
This is one of the prime reasons for owning a truck. In the past four years I have hauled: camping equipment, wedding ceremony stuff, bark for the yard, numerous Costco runs, lumber, concrete, rocks, about 10 couches now, home furniture (some of it actually my own), entertainment centers, home gyms, and so on and so on. But this is why we buy trucks!

Gas Guzzler
Of course a major cost is gas. My truck gets about 20mpg so it costs me about $30 every week now to fill the tank up. It's got muscle, but this is why we buy trucks!

Finally...
When the sad day comes like getting married, hopefully you have a spouse who will understand the need for a truck. Sure a SUV is good, but nothing beats being able to say "just toss it in the back of muh truck".
