B&H Photo - Video: Once my favorite store but not anymore! (Updated)
by mrs-j | Nov 29 '04
I have been ordering pro photography equipment from B&H Photo-Video-Pro Audio for more than two years. I always liked their service, their shipping rates and their prices. In fact, for my birthday this year, two family members gave me gift cards ...

I am hoping your other dealings went much better.

I can understand being frustrated, but if the over experiences have been good, it's a shame to dump a company with 1 bad experiences, and giving other chances to reprove them I think is good (having gift cards would make that easier too). :)

I was just wanting to check as I was preparing to order a ticket item similar to yours soon.

Thanks!

When home in NJ, I live about an hour away from B&H by train. I generally try to head in there in person so I can buy what I need, when I need it and take it with me.

Yes, I pay the higher NYS and NYC sales taxes, but at least I don't have to deal with the hassles you described here. To be fair, the most I have bought from them has been film, camera bags and a couple of lenses. Most of my lenses and camera bodies have been purchased from PHOTO ZONE in Parsippany, NJ and while some of the lenses cost me more than they would have at B&H, I knew I'd be better off with the relationship established at the local store.

What I like about B&H though is that they have such a HUGE inventory and they almost always have stock (unless it's a really new or popular item in high demand).

Well done (as usual).

Cheers,

Paul

I had a better experience (Reply to this comment)

I too had to deal with B&H customer service when the portable DVD player I ordered came with a defective disc lid. They sent me a new one next-day air (Saturday delivery even) and they sent me a will-call tag to ship the broken one back.

It did take them a few weeks to credit back my Visa for the first player... I don't understand how it's so fast to add a charge but takes weeks to do a credit.

this attitude is still 'characteristic' of this organization and hasn't changed since your review was written.

It doesn't help.

Speculate all you like about it being Da-Lite's fault. The only competent, helpful people we spoke with were Da-Lite. If such speculation, and rating my truthful, accurate opinion "SH" is what you have to do to make yourself feel better about ordering from this company, then so be it.

Not sure if this one helps... (Reply to this comment)

It sounds like you have had a lot of really good experiences with B&H, but from what I am reading here this is the first time they had to order something that came to you from another dource. It is entirely possible that all of the fault lies with Da-Lite and that Da-Lite is fudging the truth a little when you call to confront them -- what company wouldnt to make them look like the good guys? B&H might have put the correct specs on their order only to have it changed when entered in Da-Lite's system. The exchange policy seems pretty normal -- of course they can't send you another item without getting the one you have back. Overall it sounds like you usually have a good experience, true? I ask this because I'm about to place my first order with them.

Sorry to hear about the bad relation with B&H. Having been a regular customer at both its online and retail store in New York, I've always been satisfied. I retreated to B&H after having lousy experiences with many other New York based online retailers. Mostly scumbags to put it lightly. I'm hoping that B&H isn't reverting as a practice to the shifty and slimy tactics of its neighbors. Good luck. BTW, Adorama, like B&H, hasn't let me down either.

I find your reviews nicely written and a pleasure to read.

Good luck to you and shoot lots.

Agree that it is tough to escalate with B & H photo (Reply to this comment)

Well, I certainly agree with your opinion of finding it difficult to "escalate" when problems arise. I called B & H 4 days after the return deadline to return a gift. The customer service rep refused to allow the return because it was after the deadline, and he also refused to put me through to a manager to discuss it further. I finally hung up in frustration and called back and asked immediately to be put through to a manager. The manager apologized, extended the return period for a few days and all is well. But not without considerable effort and frustration on my part. I may use B & H again, but not without reservation.
