Pros: Comfortable, great noise reduction, easy to insert
Cons: Too bad they don't last forever. :)
The Bottom Line: These are the most effective and comfortable of the consumer-level earplugs I have found in drugstores. Short of something professional grade, these are the best.

| ahaight's Full Review: MAX Foam Ear Plugs (NRR 33) |
There are lots of kinds of earplugs, and these are for noise reduction (not swimming). I wear them on airplanes and sometimes when I sleep to block out ambient noise. They are rated to reduce noise up to 33 decibels, which is the highest rating I found of the various brands in stores.
These are foam, and to insert them you have to roll them into a thin pointy shape. Then use your other hand to pull up on the tip of your ear. This aligns your ear canal so you can get the earplug inside correctly. It will take a few tries to get it right, and you might have to pull kind of hard or at an odd angle. You'll know when it's correct. :)
Once inserted (which you have to do relatively quickly), the foam expands to fill your ear canal's shape for a snug fit. The base is wider and that bit stays on the outside for easy removal. You may have to hold it against your ear for a few seconds while the foam expands to prevent it from working its way free.
These earplugs are supremely comfortable, much more so than any of the silicone or waxlike plugs I've tried (and much more effective, too). After several uses, the foam sort of loses its springiness, so these earplugs should be considered disposable. If worn nightly for sleeping, I think a pair should last about 2 weeks.
