I made a purchase from the Sur La Table online store specifically because my mother requested an item from their catalog for the holidays. I had the printed catalog in front of me, but I generally prefer shopping online to mail order. With the item number at hand using the Sur La Table website was a breeze!
The site is beautiful, just like the catalog. It is well laid out with clear option to surf by category or brand name. There are also easy to find links for sale and new items, gift cards, and ideas for gift-giving. The graphics are pleasing and not too flashy - I like a site which opts for usability over bells & whistles and surlatable.com definitely fits this bill. The site includes a search by keyword or item number box right near the top of the page and this is what I used to locate the item my mother wanted.
Once on the individual item page all the information I could have possibly wanted was presented. Other than a general description of the product, Sur La Table offered a larger picture view, color/style choices, and price. The page also clearly showed whether the item was currently in stock and what the expected shipping date is if it isn't in stock..
The link to purchase couldn't be more obvious and once you've added an item to your shopping cart you can easily change the quantity, remove the item, and continue shopping. Of course, you are presented with a few other products you may like - based on what you've looked at and what is in your cart - but I never find these helpful even though I understand why merchants do this.
The checkout process is as simple as everything else here and is rather standard. Just enter your shipping and billing addresses and payment method and you're set. I did find Sur La Table's shipping prices a bit high for standard ground especially considering their delivery time of 7 to 10 days. The price wasn't too exorbitant, but for a $20.00 item that weighs less than I pound I didn't expect to pay $6.50 for shipping - especially when so many online vendors are offering free or discounted shipping rates for the holidays.
After placing my order I promptly received a confirmation email and my item arrives in about five days. Everything was in order and I am happy with my purchase from Sur La Table, I just hope my mom likes what she picked out! My only source of aggravation with surlatable.com is that they managed to send me two copies of their printed catalog (one to my billing address and one to my shipping address) before my order even arrived. They have also sent me quite a few emails advertising their goods which I certainly did not sign up for.
Based on my experience, I highly recommend Sur La Table's online store. They get an A+ for site design and ease-of-use and unlike some vendors everything is clear and upfront. They had in stock the item they said they did which is a problem at a number of other places. Basically, everything that was supposed to happen did. My order arrived early and was exactly what I wanted. My only beef was the junk mail and that's a relatively small inconvenience for quick service.
