Came Here on Your Advice, JediKermit. (Reply to this comment)
by macresarf1
And I found that I had rated your list long ago.
It is a nice list, but can you explain why 30,000 people applaud it? That's a lot of readers at Epinions, for one review.
Could it be your thump of CITIZEN KANE?
Possibly.
Actually, I agree with you. CITIZEN KANE is not the greatest film ever made. In my opinion, THE RED SHOES is.
However, CITIZEN KANE is right up there. It is a movie which deals with reality through memory, and sums up realistically the story of power in America, in the person of Charles Foster Kane. It is also about each of us, if we are not careful, in our aspirations. And a movie done in a relatively sunny day for the Republic, when we thought we had bested corporative greed, and were on top of fascism, at home and abroad.
I'm afraid that we seem to have gone beyond a time now when, individually, we can do anything to truly combat that power, which may explain why we flock to fantasies like THE LORD OF THE RINGS and, dare I say, THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK. Same message, but we don't have to deal in such films with what they used to call "tin tacks."
Fine list.
Thank you, JediKermit, for your continued trust in me.

Not so much that you don't think so much of Citizen Kane, I won't hold that against you, but that you testify you don't have the attention span for that, yet you have one for AMADEUS? It's, what, another hour longer than Citizen Kane? Or the Day the Earth Stood Still, which is good, but sloooow. I don't have the attention span for several of the movies on your list either. I guess attention span doesn't really have anything to do with time, does it?
Anyone who wears his movie passion on his sleeve, and who has Empire, Raiders and Fight Club on his top 10 has an undeniable LOVE for cinema. And probably popcorn.

Kane not my Favourite, but... (Reply to this comment)
by truckturner
It deserves the Greatest Film of All-Time tag. It's a great film and surprisingly more entertaining than most supposedly 'great' films. I'm no snooty arthouse-type, my two favourite films are "Forrest Gump" and "The Misfits". I'd still have "Citizen Kane" at number 7 (Yeah, I've changed recently. Gump's number 2 now, but I digress)- Ryan.

The only disappointment, from my end, is that since i love One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, Magnolia, Life is Beautiful, and West Side Story (Richard Roeper's fave) more than the ten you chose (except the fabulous Amadeus), i missed the write-ups i'd most have wished to see. But a lovely and fun piece this was.
cheers,

Politics... (Reply to this comment)

Citizen Kane is hailed for it's effect on cinema, not the movie itself. I hate that. Who cares how it fuels cinema? I want an entertaining movie. While Citizen Kane is by no means bad, I doubt it is the greatest movie ever made. By far, it doesn't deserve to be #1 on the AFI list. Citizen Kane may have done something for cinema, but that doesn't mean it's utterly fantastic. It's the art junkies who jump on the "intellectual movielover wannabe" bandwagon, listening to one guy and believing him. Eck!

Kane is a snoozer (Reply to this comment)

I consider myself an amateur intellectual (translation: I like to think I am smart but I am probably no where near as smart as I might think I am!) Did you have to read that last part in parens 3 times to understand it? I did.
I agree about Citizen Kane. What a boring movie! "Rosebud...Rosebud...". Yechhh! I will be diplomatic and allow for other perspectives that go for the more vintage artistic; but I really feel that Citizen Kane is WAY overhyped, I just do not see at all why it should be agreed by concensus as the greatest movie of all time. I would rename it to "Citizen Sominex".

I was just skimming your titles, and when I got to Fight Club, I had to read it, because it's my favorite and the opinions it gets are so diverse they're always worth reading. But wow, I feel like I've been 1-uped in my love of Fight Club. The way you wrote what Fight Club is all about made even ME think, which is astounding because of my devotion to it, as you can see by my username. Keep writing about the best!

Great List! I love the Muppets. I was pleased to see they made your list. I loved your runners up list, too. Great work! And you're right. Anything with Wookies is good. Did you ever see the Chewbacca/Wookie Christmas special? It was basically wookies playing the part of ewoks (same cutesie character quality and living arrangement).

Fight Club is a blantant ANTI-FEMINIST movie. It is a social commentary. That is why men love it while women usually hate it.

It is nice to see that all of your reasons for why these movies are good are your own. I hated Fight Club, but a lot of people liked it. they thought it was good and exciting. I thought it was poorly written. I also thought the events didn't play out smoothly and logically. But you like it for genuine reasons and have used your own words to describe it, not just "it's so good and awesome" or "I loved it because Brad Pitt is such a good actor". Your opinions make me want to see it again.

Yes, yes, yes!!!! this list speaks right to my depths. Very appropriate defense of each selection, props especially for _the Great Muppet Caper_, _Fight Club_, _Amadeus_, _Sleeping Beauty_, _West Side Story_ and _Waiting for Guffman_...
My only caveat is _Sound of Music_, which I've always found just a little sappy. I like parts of it, but I find it takes just a litle too much effort to sit through the "climb every mountain" bits.
And for Amadeus, I grant unreservedly that Tom Hulce rocks the casbah, but I am mystified every time I see people mention that movie and not comment on F. Murray Abraham's show-stopping genius... well, maybe I'm just being fussy.
anyway, a most excellent and admirable list.

about Citizen Kane. It's a good example of filmmaking, but doesn't do much for me on an emotional/personal level. Some interesting choices, are you a big kid or what?
