Sprint PCS: Good, Bad and Ugly

Written: Apr 04 '01

  • Customer Service:
Pros:Good phone selection, lots of features, good plans, wide coverage
Cons:Dropped calls are not uncommon, customer support is laughable
The Bottom Line: If you need nationwide coverage or advanced features, consider it. If your main concern is call reliability and quality, look elsewhere.

I've been using Sprint PCS for about 3 years. There are things I like and things I hate. So far, the parts I hate haven't spurred me to change providers. And it seems that all the mobile services in the DFW area have their problems, so no service will offer you everything.

What works:
-Good selection of phone models; important if you want to use it for Internet connections or other more advanced features. I especially like my Motorola Timeport model that synchs it's phonebook with Outlook; which saved me a huge chunk of time trying to peck away on a tiny keypad.
-Good sound quality -- when you are getting a decent signal. What those stupid radio commercials don't tell you is that it's all or nothing. The call sounds great until you get dropped. If the call goes through at all.
-Excellent nationwide coverage. I travel constantly, and it's rare that I haven't had Sprint coverage. This cuts way back on my mobile bills compared to other carriers.
-A good range of pricing plans and options

What hacks me off:
-Dropped calls are not at all unusual. They become a bit more rare when you have a good signal, but you can't always count on that. They need to put up more antennas. Signal strength in major areas like airports is often really poor.
-Service at the stores or on the phone can be abysmal. I've waited in lines or been put on hold forever; often to talk to somebody that doesn't have a clue.

If you decide to go with Sprint, keep the above issues in mind. If you travel quite a bit and like more advanced features in your service, Sprint might be for you. If you stay in one major metro area, consider other providers.

Good Luck!

-Jerry
