Ten Beauties of the 90'sJun 07 '01 Write an essay on this topic. The Bottom Line From horror to comedy to drama this list is diverse, and has all of the best of the 1990s. Throughout the 1990's both the bad and good have come and gone, only a certain few however had us talking, crying, or laughing for weeks on end. The following ten movies are my picks for the best of the decade, you may love 'em all or hate 'em all, but these are the ones that appealed to me. 10. Scream- A movie that started a hunger for horror movies that lasted several years. While I must admit Scream 2 and 3 did not impress me, as did I Know What You Did Last Summer, the original Scream scared America silly. Hats off to Kevin Williamson for the brilliant job he did to scare us all. 9. Powder- For many this might not seem like a great pick, but I personally love this movie. Mary Steenburgen is great in this flick dealing with the hatred an albino student receives in life. He also has amazing abilities that make him somewhat secluded from all of society. He is forced to live in a basement to stay away from sunlight, and society forced him to stay away from them. A great movie about how harsh we can all be at times. 8. Gattaca- The best sci-fi flick of the decade in my mind. Ethan Hawke is a youngster who can not become an astronaut because he was not born by genetic engineering. So he lives his life acting as another man to get his job. A truly well written movie. 7. Forrest Gump- This movie inspired all of America, as Tom Hanks proved that a little determination was all that was needed to succeed. Hanks love for his friends and family have made this movie a classic. 6. Billy Madison- I know this pick might not go well with some, but it was truly the most hillarious movie of the decade for me. Billy Madison, played by Adam Sandler, goes back to high school so he can gain control of his father's business. Through this all Sandler, with help from Norm MacDonald and Chris Farley, provide one heck of a comic performance. 5. Matrix- Talk about a movie utilizing modern technology. This movie never ceases to amaze you, as special effects keep coming at you continuously. This one will keep you on the edge of your seat and constantly thrilled. 4. The Fight Club- This movie can seem somewhat confusing at times, but once you have it all figured out then this movie ranks right up there with other greats of the decade. Brad Pitt and Edward Norton are simply amazing together in this one. This movie is more than just about fighting as most might think, it is much more intellectual and challenging to the mind. 3. Swing Kids- Swing Kids has to be the biggest tearjerker of the ten, and the least popular. This movie takes place in Germany, and shows how a group of kids try to go against the norm and play swing music and dance. However, the German police stop any attempt of this. This movie portrayed the politics of the Nazis and other groups of the time, and how friendships were deterred and families broken apart during the 1930's and 1940's. 2. Good Will Hunting- Matt Damon plays a janitor at a highly prestigous college in the Northeast. This movie probably has the most loaded cast with Damon, Ben Affleck, and Robin Williams, who provides Damon with great comfort and advice. Affleck and Damon also wrote this award winning flick. And your best movie from 1990-1999 is...................... (drumroll please).......................................... 1. The Shawshank Redemption- While all the movies on this list are brilliant, I just can not get enough of the this movie. I have probably seen it at least 6 or 7 times (it comes on TNT or TBS one of the two all the time) and would watch it again if it came on today. This is movie is a masterpiece, dealing with a banker who was sent to jail wrongly, for he did not commit a crime, and the friendships he makes. His friend, played by Morgan Freeman, is constantly denied for parole, but does not lose hope. Neither does Andy, played by Tim Robbins, who bonds a special friendship and bond that lasted a lifetime. The two got each other out of jail, when it seemed hopeless and improbable. Truly a wonderful classic. Well there you have it, feel free to write a comment or two, and if you have not seen any of these movies, then I suggest you do. |
