Hey Vormancian (Reply to this comment)

I think you know what you're talking about. I mean if not you, then who? I wish I had had this advice when I wrote my first asinine diatribe about a movie..and I wish the guy who has been heckling me for giving him advice would read this. Actually, I'm not sure he can read. This is the best advice in fact I've seen. I think I'll just e-mail.....yeah, that's it! Thanks

Re: I+MOSTLY+agree (Reply to this comment)

I mostly agree with you as well. I like/expect at least a little plot outline as well, and the amount of plot revealed is not so crucial as whether or not the review is JUST a plot outline.
Thanks for stoppin in.

I MOSTLY agree (Reply to this comment)
by glake
You mention Shrek, but even after seeing numerous trailers and other ads, I didn't know that it made fun of other animated fairy tales until I read about it here.
I LIKE to have a little plot outline. In MY humble opinion, the purpose here s to help others make purchasing decisions. Given that, I assume they know little or nothing about the product. But I also assume they live in the real world.
I've seen reviews that might as well be a complete transcript of the movie script.
Some others seem to assume you've seen the film 6 times but are still somehow interested in knowing whether THEY liked it or not!
For the most part you are right though. Don't tell me about the sets, or sound quality or even the actors ability unless it's exceptional (good or bad!).
They are few and far between but the best movie opinions analyze the film. If you haven't seen it, or even heard of it, they make you want to try it. If you HAVE seen it, they give you a new perspective and make you want to see it again. That said, it's easier to get a great opinion on a great movie than on a bad one.
If it's trash, it's hard to point out the finer points of why it's trash.
But as far as how Epinions works, I'm particularly proud of my opinion on "To Kill a Mockingbird" but I've made just as money on my no-better-than-average opinion on "Dead Calm". Apparently not everyone is as discerning as you are! :)
Good Revie...err I mean Good Opinion!

the things you describe here (Reply to this comment)
by pansy4agirl
are probably the main reason I stay pretty clear of 'reviewing" books, movies, etc.....I will read a handful if I think I might want to buy or see it, but I have yet to work out the "realness" in a way of describing it in my own words - and unless I feel rather "passionate" about it, I probably won't even try.....
on this note, I would REALLY like to know what you think of the two books I did write about.....
if you get a chance....
take care, keep writing....

Thank you.
I would have to say, basically, yes. My test is usually how much of a person's personality I feel like I know.

You had a lot of great things to say and summarized it better than I could. I just want to mention that there are far to many "reviewers" out there and far too few "critics".
I am a critic. I take a moment to summarize what I'm critiquing, then I let 'em have it. I have found several people on epinions who do the same...including you.
I hope the way I write is what landed me on your Web of Trust, because the way you write just landed you on mine...

I think you hit the nail on the head here! (Reply to this comment)
by amknight
Very nice - you stated it well. I have chosen to add a few people to my WOT in the past week, and it is not because they are so good at telling me about detailed movie plots. I love reading reviews that people infuse with their own personalities and experiences.
There is indeed a difference between an epinion and a review. If there weren't, I either wouldn't be reading these or I would subscribe to Consumer Reports.
Thanks!

Why not not? (Reply to this comment)
by Vormancian
Okay, before you write that comment smarty...
I realize that people might think this should be in What not to do when writing a review rather than in what to do when...
Somehow, it just felt more like a thing to do (write epinions rather than reviews) as opposed to things not to do (write reviews).
Thanks for reading it though.
