We have a 2004 Ford Escape for my job and I have been driving it since 6/04. I have to say there are some good things but mainly BAD things, I would have expected a lot more from Ford that what they have created.
My Dept got this "Escape" to replace the worn out Ford Explorer and I couldn't have been happier to get out of that piece of junk! When i first started driving it, I fell in love...Must have been the New Car smell....only.
One of the first things I noticed that I really hate to this day, is that seat belt ding that ALWAYS goes off. Sure, I like the idea of it to remind you put your seatbelt on, but if you are sitting on side of the road running radar or writing a ticket or just talking to someone w/o a seat belt, it will ding about 10 times, stop then ding another 10 times and will repeat this cycle at least 5 more times! HOW ANNOYING!! Another thing about the seat belt-There is not a "latch" in the middle to hold it up by your shoulder, so when you grab the belt, you have to open the door and almost reach all the way under the seat to actually get the clip for it, I had to put a piece of duct tape around it to keep it from falling!!
The second thing I noticed was the gas when accelerated was EXCELLENT for catching up to cars and responding quickly from a start position which is also excellent for Law Enforcement. However, you can not take a curve very fast at all! I found this out the hard way when I swear I felt the side lift up going around a street corner and the wheel "didn't turn". Hence, I was going a little faster that most people would take a curve but when you are used to a "Crown Vic" or a biggger car, this oculd have been a BIG problem.
The trunk is not very big at all to hold equiptment or anything much for the matter. The side panels are made of plastic and will loosen VERY quickly. The gas isn't real big but it does pretty good for a mid size SUV. The radio is a good factor and the console arm rest is pretty good.
So far, I have racked up 21,000 miles and I feel the brake a little jumpy already and a small knocking noise when I push in the gas which I am sure will only get louder soon!
As a final review, if you are looking for a midsize SUV, I say go for a Honda Pilot or anything non american!
