laptop vs. desktop ? - mac vs. ibm ?
Jun 09 '01
The Bottom Line It is possible (but maybe not feasible) to survive with ONLY a laptop computer.
what might be true for ibm compatibles may not apply to the macintosh - ibm's were created as business computers, with better capability in office, business, accounting, type of applications, while the apple/macs were developed originally for education - placing greater emphasis on user friendliness and graphics. The biggest argument against a lap top is probably that is it more difficult to upgrade the computer - you cannot just slip in a new hard drive, like you can with the large desktop computers and while that is true of both the pc's and macs, it seems that people who have macintoshes, unless they are computer gurus, use them mostly for school or home use. Not many macintoshes are used in the mainstream business world.
The ibm's are the business computer, and therefore are used more often in networking, downloading files from the internet, etc.; therefore, I think that laptops can be a wonderful supplement to the desktop pc, but they will probably not take the place of them. Laptops are being built with greater capabilities even than the large computers, however, their portability is also the reason for their inconvenience as a full use computer. Having to plug or unplug the cables every time the laptop is used, or brought into the room, especially if there is a desktop computer already plugged in, is ok, but it does not lend itself to a very efficient continually running office. And with the amount of file download, and upgrading that ibms may represent, upgrading a laptop may be a very real concern.
I have a laptop computer, and it actually holds more data than my big desktop computer. This is definitely the "wave of the future" - as laptops are shrinking, so that nowadays they are barely an inch thick. It makes for a wonderful portability, and ease of operation - especially with an internal modem, so that even in a hotel someplace, as long as you have a telephone line, and access to a dialup number, you can be online in seconds, and it is small enough to fit inside a briefcase, nearly.
With the ability to transfer files from a large computer at a desk to the laptops, it means that people can now take work home from the office, are not confined to the computer lab at school, and can literally "pick up and go" knowing they can still keep in touch with friends from anywhere, receive information from anyplace they need to, and even communicate back with the main computer, from where they are.
I do not think that laptops will ever replace the desktop versions of personal or business computers, but they are a wonderful addition to it. As with many new things to hit the market, they are quite expensive when they first come along, but like microwave ovens, that cost $12,000 in 1977, the technology will catch up with itself, and they will become more available to everyone.
