Rival Crock-ette Slow Cooker, The Cute Crock Pot.

Written: Dec 13 '04
Pros:Small, easy to use, convenient for sauces, inexpensive.
Cons:Not for main meals, no temperature controls, cheap lid.
The Bottom Line: This is a great slow cooker for small servings.

I was at a work party a few years back were you socialize with your co-workers and pretend you like them while drinking wine and eating food. My principal prepared one of the snacks there and she was all excited about it. So I had to try it so as not to insult her (and no one wanted to insult her.) It was a bunch of cut up apples on the side and in this small crock-pot was melted caramel. You simply dip the apple slices in the crock-pot to coat one side of them and place them on your plate. I thought it was really cool but not that cool. My wife LOVED it. So later that month my wife bought one of the crock pots and did the caramel apples the next time we had friends over. It went over with my friends very well. Since then I have used it for some cheese dips, beans, and of course caramel.

What is it?
This is a small 1-quart crock-pot. It is designed to heat things at a very slow pace. Expect it to heat things properly in 2 hours or cook things in 6-10 hours.

How it works.
There is nothing to set or control. You dump in the food in, plug in the unit, and put the lid on to add some extra insulation.

The lid
The lid is comes with is a cheap thin plastic lid. The plastic lid does not conduct heat like a metal lid would but it also does not insulate well because of how thin it is. If you can find a version a glass lid or a version with a thicker plastic lid then I highly recommend you buy it. But I do not think the thin lid should influence your buying decision, it is more of a message to the manufacturers.
The plastic lid is one solid piece of plastic so the handle is part of the mold. It is hot to the touch but you can easily hold it in your hands without getting a first degree burn.

Ease of cleaning
The inner surface is lined with a nice non-stick surface. This makes cleaning it out very easy for most foods. The caramel requires a little bit more work but it will come out. NEVER put the slow cooker in the dishwasher.

What is this ideal for?
-Dipping sauces.
-Hot side dishes.
-Meals for one.

What is it not good for?
-It will not cook dried beans. You need to cook beans and other harder food first then you can put it in the crock-pot.
-It is not designed for main meals. It is only large enough for a small side dish or dipping sauce.
-It does not heat things fast.

The test
I went ahead and tested the temperature of the beans I was cooking today and it was 199 degrees Fahrenheit.

My personal experiences
Beans- I love cooking beans on this because of the temperature control. If the beans are on the stove then you have to watch then like a hawk. With this cooker I can prep the beans in the morning, go to work, then come home to some good beans.
Canned foods- It takes a while to heat up but it works well. You will probably want to use the microwave instead of this unit.
Caramel- Works great but expect the caramel to melt slowly for a few hours. It is also a pain to clean out.
Cheese- Use a cheese designed for melting or the cheese they sell for tortilla dipping. It works great because the temperature is constant and even. Expect 2 hours for it to heat all the way through.
Soups & stews- works very well. You will only get 2 small servings out of this unit but it will work. It will be easier to pick it up and dump it instead of ladling it out.

Dimensions
Weight- 3lbs, 1.75 ounces.
Height- 5 inches
Diameter- 8 inches

concerns to ponder
-The food needs to be cut up properly; you can’t do a whole pot roast.
-You need around 2 hours to properly heat most foods, so it takes time.
-You need 6-10 hours to properly cook some foods (so flavors mingle and vegetables are soft.)

Summary
This is a small crock-pot that is ideal for sauces or single servings. It is less bulky than my other crock-pot so it is easier to use and more convenient to store. I have actually been using this for several years and have never had a problem with it. It is easy to clean, easy to use, and it does a great job for small servings. This is certainly not for large gatherings nor is it for large families.
