It's all about making a fundamental change... (Reply to this comment)
by k1j2g3
I had never been serious about diet and exercise, and I was always 'normal'...not thin, but within the normal range. I was in the military, too, and managed to maintain my weight and keep up with the exercise. Then I had my second child and got out of the military...no more free gym access!
I kept on 25 pounds from my 2nd pregnancy and it wouldn't budge. Then, about 4 months ago, I was just disgusted with myself. I had never been this lumpy and fat in my life, and it repulsed me. I hated shopping and avoided wearing anything but sweats and t-shirts at home.
That day I vowed I would stop eating the way I always have been...I totally cut out sweets except for fruits. No "diet" desserts or low-fat cookies/cakes. Just cut the non-natural sweets altogether. I have noticed a change in the way I think about food, and I am much more aware of when I am truly hungry. It is like night and day compared to how I used to eat! Even in the military, when I was exercising regularly, my diet was crappy.
I joined a gym not too long ago, as just changing my diet only gave me about a 5-7 pound weight loss. This is the first time in my life that I am determined to keep this as my permanent lifestyle...not just one until I lose the pounds I want to lose.
I have given myself the ambitious goal of losing 40 pounds, to get back to my ideal weight. I have a long way to go, but I am ready to take on the challenge.
Thanks for the inspirational words in your opinion! Everything you say is true!

you didn't mention drinking water. Lots of people eat when they're really thirsty, then drink pop.

Congrats on your weight loss! 9 years ago I lost 50 lbs over the summer and was where I am now. I used to walk 50 miles per week, plus a somewhat starvation diet to do so. Now I just starve. Not entirely my fault, dietary problems.
I forgot to mention that the 50+ of walking stopped as my boyfriend wanted me to sit with him and eat potato chips and popcorn in front of the TV instead of exercise. Of course, my weight returned.
A couple of years ago I jogged 1.5 miles at work on my lunch, and lost 5 lbs over the summer. Then I joined and went to a gym 3-4 times per week and lost 3 lbs and 2 inches in hips and waist. Am thinner now, but it my lack of food intake is taking a toll on my body.
I am glad this is working for you. I wish you much success in the future.

Congrads to you for taking your health into your own hands. As someone that has made some drastic life changes and lost a somewhat large amount of weight, I know how you have to be truely commited. I love to work out, but I find that with my new lower weight, I'm busy doing things that I could not do before. Gerri

Great Review.... (Reply to this comment)

...and very sound, sensible advice. I've gained so much since quitting smoking and am having trouble getting back to a sensible life plan, but I know that I will. I agree, diets just don't work!
Keep up the great writing...kath

Well congrats on your great review, but also on your fantastic accomplishment. Wonder how old
Monica Lewinski is doing, if she is still on the Jenny Craig. I guess they decided she sucked as a representative for them, since her rep in general sucked. Just goofing around, but really I'm so happy for you. Would love to see a before and after picture, or at least after.

Fight Fat After Forty (Reply to this comment)
by bonniesayers
I saw this book at a sale at the Hospital but I already picked something out for my kids so passed but wrote it down to find at the library. I guess it is too new since it is not there yet.
What happened to me was in December of 2000 I got my computer, April 2000 turned 40 and then divorce/visitation battle and one year later I had gained over 20 pounds. My doctor thought I was too thin at 138, but I liked me at 133. I started changing my diet when my computer was out of order for one month and eating breakfast, but now back into that rut.
I hardly eat vegetables, now preparing spinach and ham steak to get some nutrients back. There are loose dogs all around so never walk, used to when kids were in strollers.
I checked out ediets and they said I only needed to lose 15 pounds and I was not bad off.
I was reading about Suzanne Somers plan and what she includes and does not eat and hard to follow without the book and recipes, who has time for that now.
It is too hot to cook in summer with no air and kids home, plus I eat lean cuisine and health choice dinners and load up on popcorn, cookies and ice cream. I think the daily does of ice cream is going to have to stop, maybe switch to milkshakes in afternoon.
Thanks for the hints and tips. Bonnie

I guess I am finally going to have to try exercise too. That and proper eating are really the only answer.

I loved this! (Reply to this comment)

You 'hit the nail on the head' so to speak. I tried dieting without exercise for years and years with no success. Then hard exercise with no diet. Same result. It takes a sensible approach to both, but it is hard to find sensible information among all the fad diet and exercise books.
Thanks for a great review!

It's down to earth, unlike many plans. It's a very healthy attitude about dieting.

what an intelligent and sensible essay-- (Reply to this comment)
by telynor
As someone who is locked in a deadly struggle with that particular vice, yes, what you are saying is absolutely true, especially the support system. The only thing I would add, is be gentle with yourself -- you didn't get fat overnight, and you're not going to get thin all at once either. So don't beat yourself up if you slip once in while. Good luck! -- Telynor
