The Bottom Line Suggestions for beginners in the anime community. Start small, and work your way up!

I came across this site today and decided to share my piece with the new and upcoming anime community, as well as the old school Otaku such as myself. I've read the other top 10 lists, and find that, while their choices are good for someone who is into anime already, for someone who says "Huh?" (oro?) when you say the word "anime" they aren't the best to start out with.

Note: I take no responsibility if you decide to try my suggestions and can't eat for a week because you spent too much money collecting and watching the series. ^_^x Also, the order may or may not reflect an actual rating of 1 to 10.

Slayers

Slayers is the first series I ever watched. It was a wonderful immersion into anime, because it was a fast going, exciting series, and I always counted the days to the weekend when I could rent another tape. I recently completed my Slayers collection with the Try DVD box set, and I still wish there was more. Follow Lina Inverse and Gourry Gabriev as they take you into a world of magic and swordsmanship, and rise to the challenge when the going gets tough. Some low key sexual humor, and lots of laughs contained inside. NOTE: English is highly recommended for this series. It's great in japanese, but it's far more humorous in English.

Rurouni Kenshin

OMG, Kenshin is sexy. Anyway, Kenshin in a series I wish I had started on a long time ago. A long time favorite of the Otakon goers, Kenshin is a world of excitment and romance. The Legendary Battousi the Manslayer, a mercenary from the Meiji Revolution who has become a wanderer and vowed not to kill again, makes many new friends along his path. He protect these friends with his reversed blade sword, and while he doesn't kill anyone, he really knows how to kick some major butt. Lots of violence in this one. Woo. ^_^x NOTE: This is good both subbed and dubbed. I watch dubbed, because I love Kenshin's voice, as well as Sanosuke's. Also check out the OAV's, Samurai X and the movie.

Ranma Nibun no Ichi (Ranma 1/2)

Ranma is hilarious. A boy and his father travel to China to train in a forgotten training ground, and each manages to fall into a spring which holds the spirit of someone long dead. When doused with cold water, Ranma becomes a "girl-type Ranma", and Gendo, his father, becomes a giant Panda Bear. Alas, poor Akane has managed to get herself engaged to Ranma. Laugh along as they try to deal with their situation from day to day.

Irresponsible Captain Tylor

Tylor is full of hilarity as well. He really is, as the title suggests, irresponsible. Somehow he manages to join the army, and become captain of the Soyokaze (Gentle Breeze). The mismatched crew comes to love their captain, but not before some really wild stuff goes on. ^_^x

Trigun

Unfortunately, I haven't had the chance to complete this series as of yet, but the first half of it I can vouch for. Set in a western/scifi type background, it's definately unique.

Neo Genesis Evangelion

Eva was an anime that I was skeptical about. I'd seen many AMVs (anime music videos) from it, and didn't know if I'd like it. However, Eva is one of the better series out there. DO NOT WATCH THIS IN ENGLISH!!! God, I could slap whoever created the dubbed version. Gendo Ikari is trying to save the world, with the help of the Children and their Evangelions. Second Impact has already occurred, nearly snuffing out the existance of mankind. Now, the Angels are back and trying to bring on Third Impact, in which no human will survive. But Gendo seems to have a schedule of his own.

Sorcerer Hunters (Bakuretsu Hunters)

Sorcerer Hunters is a little more extravagant than other animes I've seen. A group of five very different people are trying to save the world from the flames of revolution created by the sorcerers of the land and Zaha Torte, the supreme bad guy. Led by Big Momma and Dotta-chan, they are fighting against the odds, and the clock. Note: I recommend Japanese for this series. I don't care for the dubbed version.

Sailor Moon

Not the TV version, which is cut up, but the video version, which has a bit more substance. It's cutsey, but we all need a little cuteness in our lives now and then. ^_^x

To Heart

Only available in fansubs, as far as I'm aware. To Heart is a very good series, created by a man who went into actual Japanese high schools to find out what kind of lives these children lead. A good reference for japanese culture.

Kodomo no Omocha (Kodocha)

I hope you can read fast. ^_^x Sana-chan has a big mouth and she loves to run it. Also only available in fansubs, as far as I know. Sana-chan's life is no piece of cake. She's a famous child actress, and her mother is an award winning book writer, and yet she must try to live the normal life of a sixth grader. Good luck, Sana-Chan!

Unlike most people who will tell you to go straight for the big boys of anime: Grave of the Fireflies, Akira, Ghost in the Shell, Escaflowne, Ninja Scroll, those kinds of anime, I suggest that you start small. The anime culture takes some getting used to, and it's a lot easier to immerse yourself fully if you have a little background in it first. Watch a few of my suggestions, and then decide where you'd like to go from there. If you'd like to learn more about anime, attend a convention. There is so much out there that you can learn by spending a Saturday immersed in anime. You come to learn that you're not as much of a fan as you think you are. ^_^x
