Re: Why+NH (Reply to this comment)

It can be all right to refer to IDs under certain circumstances. Too often there are rants about abusers, but what good does it do if no one knows who to avoid?

It is hard to get the rating we all strive for. (Reply to this comment)
by Susie-34668
I have been reading and rating everyday since October last year. I read at least 50 epinions a day. I have managed to get 98 people to trust me. Everyone who rates me I rate back. I hope I rate honestly. We work very hard and it is so frustrating when people abuse this site.
I enjoyed reading this and do wholly agree with you.
Susan.

That's a poor reason to NH. If the opinion is helpful, it doesn't become less helpful for naming names.

because epinions is out there somewhat.. The other day I did a search to find an answer to a question at ask geeves and it popped up.. I know many times where I was at a website ready to buy something and there was an Epinion staring straight at me.. I was surprised, but they are trying in that matter..

Many good points (Reply to this comment)

I really enjoyed reading your article. You have made several good points. I, too, am concerned about some of the abuse I have seen on epinions. I'm off to read more of your reviews.

Hmm... (Reply to this comment)

good points here...I guess almost all of us have been concerned about the abuse here once in a while. There're probably hundreds of abusers out there that we haven't yet found, but I realise only those who plagiarize or write questionable reviews are removed...those with off-topic ones somehow remain. *sigh*
I agree too, that it requires some sort of following to get your review to the top, which can be a big problem for the consumer, and perhaps unfair to smaller members. But I'm sure most of us have at least put in a fair amount of effort. The systems here may be the only way to moderate this site, but I have to admit that they appear to have failed the intention of Epinions.
Keep up the great work!

Your article has made an epionion on me... I am not here to make $$$. It wouldn't even buy my family McDonalds. I read for advice, and I have noticed the abuse, but I have decided that I will not quit. It takes all of us doing our best to make it a better place for others coming in.
Keep up the good work...

Exactly... (Reply to this comment)

You make many excellent points in this, but none so important (to me anyway) as addressing the general effectiveness of the site. When our reviews are compiled on a list, with the same members' reviews always at the top of that list-it is nearly impossible for a cross section of experiences with products/services. Certainly the most helpful reviews should be at the top, but I've often wondered why not rotate these reviews and give all members the same opportunity to be heard. At the very least, they should offer "most recent" VH reviews in place of some on top that were written a year ago just because an advisor wrote it-especially service reviews that change over time.
Sorry for using your comments to rant! Great job here

I can see what your saying. I doubt the effectiveness of it, yes. But I continue to write in hope. Trust me, no one in their write mind will write opinions here just for the money.
It's just that, sometimes I wonder if all my work to try and help other people is actually paying off. Do people actually read some of my editorials and Learn something? or do they just post comments saying they learn't alot when they are really hoping I would click on their name and rate their opinions.
I never said Epinions is a waste. There are tons of extremely good advice on this site, but the point I'm trying to make is that alot of this is hidden by a layer of not so helpful advice.

if you doubt (Reply to this comment)

the power of epinions, why do you bother contributing? the lure of easy money for minimal effort? not that I'm accusing you of fraud.
I know that Epinions has helped a lot of non-members make decisions. I have received tons of e-mail asking me where a car seat I reviewed can be purchased. Those people found epinions through amazon and msn.
I was also interviewed for an article in the washington post about an inexpensive doll I reviewed. Again, that writer found me and epinions through a random search on the internet.
All I can say is if you don't believe in the sight you probably shouldn't contribute.

Well Put. (Reply to this comment)

Hear, hear! I completely agree with your assessment, and I don't feel that you did anything wrong in posting Ptiemann as an example. You made it quite clear that you were not being direct and were simply using him as a hypothetical member due to his following.
I don't care what others may think of using names. Unless you're actually attacking that person directly, it makes perfect sense to use someone as a reference. Very well written essay. Regards.

Re: I+understand+your+frustration... (Reply to this comment)

Me too. But I was looking up something in askjeeves.com. I didn't want to look at epinions I already had and it epinions was listed first as the place to go to find out about whatever it was! Also, the no name person if he works hard enough can make advisor and get his name at the top or near the top also. But again, I do see your point. jo

If you read carefully, I said that I only used Ptiemann's name because he has the capability of doing what I said, I never said/mean't he did it.
Anyway, you can rate however the heck you feel to. I just want my opinion to be heard.

just wanted to let you know that I was somewhere online (can't remember) shopping and there was an epinion logo/link near the products. The caption was --Want to Read What Consumers Say About This Product? So, it looks like they are working on getting the name out.
