I am on the web 8+ hours a day for my job as a news producer for a science tv show. I often need to find people by their name alone, or find information about some obscure scientific research. I would be lost without google.
For ages I had been using Alta Vista and Ask Jeeves - and coming away frustrated. Then someone told me to try Google. I was amazed that it returned pages that were not only relevant, but were exactly what I was looking for.
80% of the time the exact person, place or information I am looking for comes up in Google's first 10 hits... and 95% of the time I find what I am looking for in the first three pages of searches. This is amazing... their search algorithms do a really excellent job of weeding out the enormous amount of chaff that is floating around on the internet. Still, here are some things that the website doesn't explain that will make your searches work even better.
1) Don't use words like "and" "of" "is" "the" etc...
Google just drops them anyway - and this will prevent your receiving a little "reminder" that google doesn't use them when your search comes back.
2) Try using different terms for the same thing... for example, I was looking for headpieces for my wedding, I searched under headpieces, veil, tiara, wedding accessories, and they each came back with some different results - but all were relevant, which was nice.
3) If you're looking for something very specific, put it in quotes... for example, I was looking for someone's name, John Rayner... by putting it in quotes I only get results where "John Rayner" appears... not ones that just have a John somewhere on a page with a Rayner.
Overall this is an excellent search site, which I use continuously all day long. Even if you have only vague search terms you still get good results.
