Cheap Thrills and Chills in Manhattan or Epicure's NYC Ice Cream Guide

Do I really need to say something here? I think the title and review speak for themselves.

I will stick to my own provincial Blue Bell Pistachio Almond, thank you very much. Drat my limited ice-cream horizons, anyway.

Lucky when it comes to food, I agree, but let's not even talk about housing, pollution or transportation. In fact, I bet that's why we have so many good ice cream vendors - gotta find some way to keep people smiling. But, hey - it works well enough for me. :)

You know I wrote this piece with the express intent of presenting you with enough temptation that you would be forced to make that 14-hour drive to NYC. Might I add that I have designed walking tours of the city to incorporate as many as three ice cream vendors a day. I could fit in more, but it would depend on your stamina. You really need to train for events like these.

Regarding mango ice cream, I really like the Chinatown Ice Cream Factory's version as well as the mango ice cream at Cendrillon where you can have it by itself or served on top their delectable mango tart. You know what else they offer? Purple yam ice cream - another of my favorites, probably an acquired taste. So shall I be expecting you this August, Teresa? :)

I'm shocked! Doesn't everyone keep at least a pint (or more prudently a half-gallon) of ice cream in their freezer just for such emergencies?! I hope you have learned your lesson. ;)

By the way, I probably wouldn't turn down Homemade butter pecan either. When I was growing up, my favorite ice cream was Thrifty's.

Hey Barbara,

Great to hear from you! No kidding about the custard. I didn't know you grew up in New York. Never been to Coney Island myself, although there are plenty of Coney Island imports in the city, like the custard and their famous hot dogs. Nothing quite so smooth and creamy as frozen custard unless we're talking about gelato, of course. I'm sure you know what I mean. :)

I'm with Teresa. Philadelphia's pretty big and varied, but we ain't got nothing on you New Yorkers, the luckiest folks in the whole wide world.

Guess what I have a craving for? And guess what I have absolutely none of in the freezer?

Not that it would've been up to par with the places you described, though...just plain ol' Homemade brand. But I wouldn't say no to a pint of Homemade Butter Pecan ice cream right now...

Pints at the Gourmet Garage! I know where I'm doing my grocery shopping this week. So the Magnolia Bakery ice cream is being produced by a farm in New Jersey, huh? Funny, but the vendor made it seem like Magnolia Bakery was producing the ice cream themselves. Oh well, maybe they are affiliated in some way.

I don't know how I missed the NYT article on ice cream. I read the food section religiously. I think someone at the NYT and I must think along the same lines. Not long after my review of Mary's Fish Camp (in which I compared the lobster roll at Mary's to the lobster roll at Pearl Oyster Bar) was posted, the NYT printed an article which also compared the lobster rolls at the two rival restaurants. They arrived at the same conclusion that I did. Hmmm. Strange coincidences, huh?

Thanks for your comment. I tried the Buttercup Bakery and the Lady Baltimore based upon your review. The Lady Baltimore cupcake is delicious, but I think my loyalties still lie with the Magnolia Bakery, especially now that they have ice cream.

Sorry to hear that. I know what it's like to have that god-awful craving for something you just can't have. This may not be the best solution, but there is now a Magnolia Bakery cookbook which contains recipes for many of their most popular treats.

Italian ices are also wonderful although I don't think there is any one place that I would recommend over others. Do you have any favorites?

Thanks for stopping by, Laura. I would join you on that jog, but I've heard that it's bad to engage in strenuous exercise before your ice cream has fully digested. I know where you're coming from though - there is a reason why I walk to and from work everyday, other than the fact that it's 100 degrees in the subway. Another way to alleviate your guilt just a little - have gelato, which generally contains less fat than ice cream or better yet, have sorbet, which is often fat-free. Or have your husband order an ice cream and steal spoonfuls from his dish - you know the old saying, calories don't count unless you order the dessert yourself.

I had a feeling you would be able to identify with the "Happy Ice Cream-Eating Face." I think all firms should have regular ice cream socials to promote employee morale.

I am ashamed to say that I have yet to try the dulce de leche gelato at Cones. The colors of the sorbettos are just so enticing that I am always drawn to that case first, but I'll bring you some dulce de leche if you agree to bake an apple crumb pie. Mr. Epicure is going to argue for a pecan pie of course, but you don't have to listen to him. ;)

Yeah, the dragon is kinda funny looking. A baby dragon I'd say, judging from the short, stubby spikes on his back and his rounded tummy. You know, they needed an image that would appeal to the kiddies.

Feel free to ramble whenever the inclination strikes. Your ramblings are such a pleasure to read. Too bad the IM emoticons are not available here. Would save you the trouble of having to type the word "geek." (picture laughing emoticon)

Wow, considering the incredibly high regard that most film critics have for Citizen Kane, I am speechless in the face of such a compliment. What can I say, except a humble thank you.

This is a great read.
and it is funny that you should mention the magnolia bakery ice cream. I read about their ice creams in an article dated may 16 on the NYtimes website a few days ago. it turns out that their ice creams are made by "West (something -- i forgot) Farms" out in NJ and you can get pints of it here at the Gourmet Garage.

Additionally, there was also another nytimes article about ice cream. (jun 1, http://nytoday.com/articles/982283183654.html). This article listed ice cream places, but only had one-line descriptions. Your review is way better, more compelling, and entertaining to say the least.

I am 3000 miles away from Magnolia Bakery and that delicious banana pudding with nilla wafers, and now there's pretty much nothing else I want. God, I miss that (as well as some of the other wonderful treats you mention.)

I'm also fond of the Italian ices in SoHo, but that's not ice cream, now is it?

Great job...darn, I'm hungry.

I just returned to write this comment, hours after reading your epinion, to let you know that I had to have an icecream! You're epinion broke down my dieting will power and I succumbed to the temptations of that sweet, frosty symbol of summer.

I would thank you for writing a wonderful essay (which it is), but I have to go jog off some of these calories. :)

Your take on the ability of ice cream (especially bought to go, in a cone) is dead-on! Dr. kboo and I even have a term for it- "Happy Ice Cream-Eating Face."

Cones and CICF are two of my favorites for ice cream, though I have to disagree with you on the green tea- I think it actually does have a fairly strong tea-ish flavor to it - not so much as the darker colored green tea ice creams that are found at many Japanese restaurants, but I always thought that the "dark" green tea ice cream was a little too heavy-handed with the smoky tea flavor.

Like Mr. Epicure, I have a really hard time walking out of CICF without some lychee sorbet.

Cones makes *the best* dulce de leche gelato. Now there's where I like a little smokiness. (to the ice cream)

So the creature on the CICF banner is a dragon? I always thought it looked like a turtle. Maybe it's their rendition of a non-threatening dragon with Happy Ice Cream Eating Face?

Okay, now I've realized I've rambled on far too long. I really am a geek.

P.S. Ronnybrook Farms "Apple Pie" ice cream atop a Little Pie Company apple pie (or my homemade apple pie). Mmmmm....

Cones dulce de leche with apple crumb pie. Or pecan pie.

Yeah, I am a geek. Will stop now.

You are to dining what tlimjoco is to music. This is excellent--I don't want to even speculate as to how much money it has cost you to reach the level of knowledge of fine eating that is displayed in this review. I do know, however, that it sure as hell is worth my trust.
