My Romantic Movie Awards
Jun 12 '01
The Bottom Line There's always something to set apart the best romance movies from all others, something unique (like a chamber pot, maybe).
I love the goofy categories that the MTV Movie Awards come up with and I’m a huge romantic, so I decided to combine the two into ten unique categories to explain why they’re my favorite romantic movies, but they aren’t in a specific order. (If you think I’m missing something, check the Love Story category too. I’m doing the same thing there.)
(10) Best Romance Stemming from a One Night Stand: “Fools Rush In” - Matthew Perry and Selma Hayek’s characters have a one night stand that results in pregnancy. Deciding to do the right thing, the couple gets married and discovers that love isn’t as easy as it looks.
(9) Best Romance in Which the Guy Never Says ‘I Love You’ : “Titanic” - It’s true. Although Jack (Leonardo DiCaprio) loves Rose (Kate Winslet) he never once says the magic words. The old woman telling the story for the first time in eighty years gives a personal insight that makes a predictable story touching.
(8) Best Shakespeare Romantic Tragedy with a Contemporary Twist: “William Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet” - Move over old-timers, it’s Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes playing the traditional roles in an untraditional way. While the dialogue is the same as the play, modern music and some interesting choices for setting make the story almost new.
(7) Best Romance With the Strangest Names: “Where the Heart Is” - Novalee, Forny and Americus. You have to admit, the names are strange. The movie, however, is the touching story of a teenage mother whose boyfriend leaves her at a Wal-Mart when she’s seven months pregnant.
(6) Best Version of a Romance Done Too Many Times: “She’s All That” - It’s the classic cool person makes bet to ‘clean up’ and popularize a ‘geek’ or something along those lines and then falls in love with the person who is furious to discover that they were a bet. Freddie Prinze Jr, Rachel Leigh Cook, Paul Walker and Matthew Lillard star.
(5) Best Romance With Better Music: “Dirty Dancing” - Starring Jennifer Grey as Baby and Patrick Swayze as Johnny, this movie is full of music and some of the hottest dance numbers ever done. It’s a typical good girl falls for a bad boy story but the music makes it a classic.
(4) Best Romance Staring Keanu Reeves: “A Walk in the Clouds” - Keanu Reeves plays Paul, a World War II veteran who finds an unwed mother while he is traveling. He pretends to be her husband to meet her family and ends up truly falling in love with her.
(3) Best Romance with a Chamber Pot Scene: “Far and Away” - Two Irish young adults, one a rich Protestant (Nicole Kidman) and the other a poor Catholic (Tom Cruise) run away to America to join in the rush for land in the turn of the century. The chemistry is amazing and the movie is outstanding.
(2) Best Made for TV Romance: “10th Kingdom” - Even though this was a five part series, I watched all of it the first time through and managed to catch most of it the second time it was on. Virginia (Kimberly Williams), and her father Tony (John Laroquette) leave Central Park by stepping through a magic mirror and find themselves in a land of fantasy where fairy tales are real and anything goes. Other cast members include Scott Cohen (Wolf), Camryn Manhem (Snow White), Ann Margeret (Cinderella), Diane West (Wicked Queen) and Ed Harris (Head Troll).
(1) Best Romance Based on a Shakespeare Play: “10 Things I Hate About You” - This movie, starring Heath Ledger (“The Patriot”, “A Knight’s Tale”) and Julia Stiles (“Save the Last Dance”) is loosely based on the Shakespearean play “Taming of the Shrew”. Kat (Stiles) and Patrick (Ledger) head the cast which also includes Allison Janney (“West Wing”), Andrew Keegan (“7th Heaven”) and Joseph Gorden Levitt (“3rd Rock from the Sun”). This adaptation is about a high school senior whose little sister sets her up with the scary bad boy of the school so the younger girl can start dating. It’s humorous, cute and overall charming.
