How Much Do You Want To Spend?

Jun 12 '01

The Bottom Line A lightweight notebook for carrying around! Consider other options that'll make the laptop cheaper, such as the processor, ram, display and HDD space.

I myself work at a computer store.
I see many people come in and want a laptop for either work or school. Many of them have a tight budget of around $2000 and want an Intel Pentium III chip in their laptop. What i do advice to my customers is that they think about what they really need to do with the laptop. Generally Intel Pentium III laptops cost a fortune especially if you want the extra ram , bigger screen and larger hard disk space.
I recommend that you sit down and think about what you're going to bbe using the laptop for. If you're a graphic designer you'll definatlly need something with alot of umft like an Intel Pentium Processor with lots of ram and big hard disk for your files. If you're a student or a business man/women who just uses the laptop for general word processing, databases or general surfing the net you should't be paying much. An intel celeron chip or an Amd chip is just as good for you as a Pentium chip. The public have been led to belive that the best and the only one that'll do the job are Pentium III laptops, wrong! You're looking to pay more for a Pentium chip that'll do the same thing as a Celeron. Generally the pentium chip can go further but if you only need the notebook for general work then a celeron is all you need and all u need to spend.
You also have to think about RAM, hard disk space and screen quality. The standard ram these days for brand new laptops should be at least 64MB ram, this'll give the insight and power that'll help your celeron or pentium chip laptop. Hard disk space is required to be big, especially if you want to keep it for a while, due to the fact that upgrading a hard disk can be hard to do on a notebook. Make sure you get above 6GB , that should be the standard. IF you're a person also that sits infront of the screen alot i suggest you get a TFT display rather than a HPA or any other. the quality of the TFT display won't strain your eyes as much as a HPA would, and the standard is around 12".
If you're a business traverler i suggest you go for something lightweight but the problem with them is that they usually have a week battery compared to 3kg laptops, but it does the job. Lightweight laptops tend to get more expensive but if you consider other options for other specifications such as a Celeron processor, or just 64MB ram instead of 128MB, and a 10GB Hdd instead of 15 then it'll save you money and you'll get the laptop of your choice.
