The Bottom Line Raves can be great experiences, but parents need to use common sense. Tell your kids about drugs and their effects and just hope that they make the right decisions.

I believe that in order to be a good parent, you have to know what's going on in the world your child lives in. For this very reason I will enlighten you parents the world of raves. A rave is basically an all night dance party and mostly teenagers attend them. Raves are held in privately owned buildings, sports arenas, and in remote areas (like the desert). The cost to get in is anywhere from $5 to over $50 (depending on the location and people attending). If you've watched the news you've probably seen stories about kids dying of drug overdoses and car accidents due to being under the influence. It's because of the major drug scene at raves that parents need to be cautious.

A misconception of raves is that all the people there are on drugs. This is not true. Raves can be an amazing experience, but parents have to use good judgment when allowing a child to go into this environment. One thing you have to remember is that no matter how protective you are of you child, if they want to use drugs, they're going to.

The major rave drug is MDMA AKA Ecstasy, E, and X. This drug basically releases major doses of serotonin into the brain and increases all emotions and body sensations. Since MDMA is fairly new (it's been around for roughly 20 years I believe), its effects on the body aren't definitely known, although they can't be good. Most of the people who have died after taking Ecstasy haven't died of an overdose (contrary to popular belief). Ecstasy raises body temperature and dehydrates the body. Most people who have taken the drug were just stupid and didn't drink enough water. If you let your kid go to raves, please give them extra money for water because even if they aren't taking drugs they dance and sweat and dehydrate anyway. People on Ecstasy also tend to grind their teeth (that's why so many "ravers" suck on pacifiers).

The problem with Ecstasy is that it's a designer drug so you don't exactly know what you're getting. Chances are it's not pure MDMA. Other drugs known to have been found in Ecstasy are; methamphetamine, Ketamine, caffeine, PCP, and DXM. DXM is a chemical compound found in cough syrup. In large doses DXM can be fatal. If someone has mistakenly taken DXM instead of Ecstasy it's very important to stay hydrated and not to dance at the rave. Although people do take DXM for recreational drug use, if someone doesn’t know that's what they're taking, the experience can be awful. If you allow your child to use Ecstasy, encourage them to buy an Ecstasy testing kit available at www.dancesafe.org

Other drugs popular at raves are Ketamine AKA Special K, Mushrooms AKA shrooms, and LSD AKA acid. Drugs are sold openly at raves and generally security doesn't do a darn thing about it. Of course, security at different raves encforces different rules, and there are always exceptions and additions to rules( for example, as someone who commented on my editorial pointed out, some raves won't allow you enter if you have drug paraphernalia, while others will).

Raves can be a fun experience though. They have a very happy environment, great music, and you can meet some very cool people. It's important for parents to be involved in their children's lives and if your child goes to raves or they go and just don't tell you, you should be aware of what's going on. Raves do have their upsides. Dancing is great exercise and the music can get you high without drugs.

Although I just wrote this review I'm going to add one last paragraph since I seem to be getting some negative reviews. I do not advocate drug use, but no matter what you or I say or do, people are still going to use drugs. Now you can sit there and pretend there's no problem and let people die from being undereducated, or you can educate people to make sure if they decide to use drugs to be as safe as possible. Of course drug use is never really safe, but there are precautions that can be taken. And to be quite frank, if you don't like this editorial because I offer that kind of advice, then you're part of the problem too and you're just as bad as the people who drugs themselves.
