Too Good for Epinions? by beerfly | Jun 13 '01 Spaten Optimator is one of my favorite beers. It's pure, it's big, it's reliable, it's a technical marvel. Even if you 'don't like beer,' find it, and try it.Return to opinion

Good point. Beer, luckily, is more subjective, so I can do things like compare it to other stuff (an aroma like fresh, cool bread, prickly carbonation, a finish like eating bark). You can broaden the vocabulary by widening the comparisons.
As for eating with Optimator... well, I have to confess, that I do LOVE the stuff with goulash.

It sounds like (Reply to this comment)
by Horswispr
this is to you what Sam Smith Oatmeal is to me. To eat food with it is disrespectful. Hey, thanks for your comment on my Dumpster Diving Epinion. Good point about borrowing beer terms from the website, bottle, etc. I quote the bottle sometimes (in quotes), but my knowledge of beer terms is pretty much limited to: sweet, bitter, yeasty, big bubbles, little bubbles, skunky, non-skunky, and descriptions of color and texture. With guitars, and other things musical, I'm running into the problem of running out of descriptive terms. When it feels like I could computer-generate my reviews, substituting "mahogany" for "rosewood," and "intonation was true up the neck" for "intonation was fairly true up the neck," etc., it'll be time to take a break.

They're never going to put more beers on, are they?

Der Gemütlichkeit...
Very enjoyable read about a beer that is, indeed, too good for Epinions.

Re: Spaten Island (Reply to this comment)
by beerfly
Y'know, I've never been drinking on Staten Island. I'll have to remedy that. Especially since this place sounds like my kinda place (this beerwriter... do you happen to know him a lot better than I do?). Best mass Spaten experience I ever had was stopping at a bar in Rochester with that same bro-in-law Chris and three other beer geeks to find five taps of Spaten on sale for $5 a pitcher (including Optimator!), and this only about two years ago. What a day for a cab ride...

Re: Great Triple Review! (Reply to this comment)
by beerfly
EH? I don't remember reviewing any triples...
"Calibration" seemed to be the thing to do, Andrew. I was faced with two beers that I thought were good examples of the style that were quite different. So I threw in another to tip the vote.
As for Celebrator... I almost opened a bottle of that, too. Should have, that would have been even better!
I would post more often, but this is what I do for a living, and it's kind of like giving away money for me to write here. My reviews usually take me about an hour to write, and that's not a great return on my time!

Spaten Island (Reply to this comment)
by pubscout
Lew,
Have you ever hit Killmeyer's Old Bavarian Inn just across the Arthur Kill in Staten Island from Perth Amboy?
A certain beerwriter we both know reviewed it a few years ago and gave the place the title you see above.
The owner says he's the biggest repository of Spaten beers on the East Coast. In fact, he claims that he will carry no beer unless its country of origin is either Germany or one that abuts it....except of course, for the BMC's he says he HAS to have for the uninitiated.
You get the chance, we'll go have an Optimator there, though I can't promise the same epiphany you experienced on the Hudson.

You've given me another useful phrase "calibrate the palate".
I love Spaten Opt., interesting to see these back to back. I've been looking for Sam's Doppel for a while but we don't have a specialized beer sstore out here in the desert. Anyway guess I should be looking for the Paulaner first now, as wellas Celebrator and others.
Great review, you should post more often. I've run into you at that Philly site I told you about and last night at MJ's site.

Comparison reviews are THE way to go, if you've got the ... resistance for it. Some of the most relevatory tastings I've ever done involved as many as 12 beers. Whenever I try a new beer or whiskey, I always try it against another similar drink I know well. You learn so much more that way.
Glad my strain was not in vain!

I enjoyed reading all three reviews of these beers, and finding out how they stacked up to each other back to back. And it sounds like you had a great time sampling and writing :-).

Re: Ever tried Kamenitza? (Reply to this comment)

Maria Ekaterina,
I love Eastern European beers. I've tried as many of them as I can find, and have yet to find a sub-par one. In my opinion, beers of the Baltic and Balkan countries are some of the still undiscovered gems of brewing. Thanks for the tip, I'll keep my eye out for Kamenitza.

Ever tried Kamenitza? (Reply to this comment)
by MariaEkaterina
Thanks for the great beer reviews. Kamenitza is only brewed in Plovdiv, Bulgaria. It may be exported to Belgium since the Belgians acquired the brewery a few years ago but I am not sure. It's the king of beers in my opinion but of course I am very partial. I love its slightly bitter flavor and its golden color. I what you would think of it?
