I do not remember how or when I stumbled onto the Pogo website, but it was years ago and I still love it. It is fun and extremely addicting.
Pogo is available in two forms: the free version and a Club Pogo version.
For free you can play a variety of games, but with ad interruptions. You have the chance to win a variety of prizes or money through spins you receive after winning games or through the game itself. Also, as you accumulate tokens, you can enter the tokens into drawings for the chance to win money.
For about $30 a year, you can join Club Pogo, where there are no ad interruptions and more games, called Club Pogo Exclusives. As a member, any cash won is doubled, up to $4,999. The best part of being a member, is getting badges. Every week two new badges are offered for completing different challenges in the games, and you can complete one previous challenge that you missed or were not around for. They also give badges for achieving different rankings in some of the games.
Sign up is quick and easy, for either of the two. You can even start off with the free version and later get the Club Pogo through a quick process of entering credit card information or setting up to pay with a check. Pogo offers a variety of ways to join the Club Pogo through monthly, six-month, or yearly subscriptions.
Pogo has classic games: chess, checkers, backgammon, solitaire, spider solitaire, dominoes, hearts, freecell, cribbage, euchre, spades, bridge, wordsearch, and crossword puzzles. Casino games include roulette, bingo, blackjack, poker, keno, video poker, slots, and pai gow poker. There is also sports games: football, baseball, golf, snowboarding, skateboarding, and racing.
Club Pogo Exclusives include pinochle, texas hold 'em poker, different types of solitaire games, mahjong garden, gin, bingo, and canasta.
Pogo also has classic games that they have added a twist to and games they made up themselves. WordJong is one of them. It is like mahjong, but you have to spell words to remove the tiles. In Word Whomp, you have to "whomp the 6 gophers to spell as many words as you can before time runs out!". It is one of my favorites.
Each game has instructions, which are simple and easy to read, that quickly explain the basics of the game. Some games have an option to practice with a robot before playing.
In the single player games, you enter a room with other people and can chat while playing. In the multi-player games, you can play against other people or against the computer. I play pinochle a lot, and have made a few friends while playing. I added them to my friends list, and now I can look for them to join me in a pinochle game. And in Club Pogo you can send messages or invitations to people on your friends list.
Pogo also offers a lot of their games "To Go". You can purchase these games at stores or over the website to download to your computer and play offline. The games usually offer more than they do on the website and you can even rack up tokens to later add to your account online.
In the community center, you can read the latest news, buy merchandise, see the latest winners of prizes and money, and go to Badge Central. Here you can see what the next weeks badges will be, and look at the badge books from 2003, 2004, or 2005. Also you can see the game award badges and the special edition badges.
The games on Pogo load quickly. The first time you play a game takes a little longer, but after that it loads in seconds. On occasion I have had trouble getting into the site, usually when they release a new game. I have only had one problem, which was when I lost part of my ranking on a game. They have a help section where you can e-mail questions and complaints to the staff, or search through the FAQs. I sent an e-mail and it was replied to in about four hours, though they did not settle the problem.
Overall, I am completely satisfied with Pogo. There is such a variety of games, everyone can find games they like. I have been a member of Club Pogo since August and I think it is worth the $30 a year. I play a little (or a lot) almost every day. Getting those badges can take some work - and a friend and I have a little competition going to see who can get more badges than the other. Currently I am winning, but I have to hurry back to the site so that I can keep my lead!!
