Tans are like Boobs...

The Bottom Line Tans are like boobs. Who cares if they're fake as long as they look good?

When I was in high school, my best friend, who has very dark skin, used to point out other people’s tans, and make comments like, “fake bake, “ or “tan in a can,” but if you have fair skin, self tanning lotions, gels, and foams are a great way to get a fast, even tan.

Shorts Season

If you live in an area where the seasons actually change, you’ll usually see big coats in the winter, and as soon as spring comes along, out come the shorts. A few years ago, I was amazed. I couldn’t believe how many people already had great tans in early spring. I never did. I inherited my mother’s fair skin. Although my mom doesn’t tan at all, my skin actually tans after a lot of sun exposure.

I realized most of these people were going to a tanning bed, and started doing so myself. This seemed like a great way to get a tan, but as we have read, it’s bad for our skin. It was also making my skin dry, so I stopped going. I found an easier, less expensive way to tan.

Why gel?

Most self tanners come in lotion, gel, foam, or spray. I have tried all of these, and they basically all work the same way. I guess it’s just a matter of preference. I am currently using a gel, and I honestly can’t tell the difference between the gel and the lotion. It could just be the brand I’m using, but I haven’t seen any other gel that looks different from the lotion. The gel I use is called NO-AD. This is the stuff that isn’t advertised, so it’s cheaper (about $5 for a 16 oz. bottle.) Now, I don’t mind paying more for something if it works better, but I really like this stuff, and 5% of NO-AD‘s profits are donated to support drug and alcohol addiction prevention programs in high schools in the U.S.

Application of a gel

First, you want to make sure your skin is clean. Then, you simply apply a thin, even coat over the skin. A very small amount should be used around hair lines, knees, and elbows. It’s important to wash your hands after you apply the gel, or you will end up with orange hands. It’s also important for the gel covered skin to have minimal contact with clothes to avoid staining them.

You won’t see the tan immediately. It takes a few hours before you actually see the color, at which time you can reapply if you want to go darker. Continue this process until you have achieved your desired tan. Most self tanners come in light-medium or medium-dark shades, or some other variation. If you have extremely fair skin, you would want to start with the light-medium color. I had a slight base tan when I starting using the gel, so I am using the medium-dark, which actually isn’t much darker than the light-medium in this brand, but it could vary from brand to brand. Some self tanners also contain sunscreen. Others allow you to tan through the color. The sunless tan will fade a bit with each shower, but usually 1 coat every couple of days will maintain the desired tan.

Avoiding Streaks

To avoid streaks, it’s important to use a small amount of gel, and apply it evenly. Don’t gob it on, and don’t use as much around the knees and elbows, or you might end up with big orange circles around those areas. If you have any dry patches, it is best to exfoliate first to avoid dark splotches. Ladies need to shave their legs before applying a gel to avoid terrible streaking. Sunless tanning gel goes best over freshly shaved legs (Sorry guys.) I tried applying this stuff on not freshly shaved legs, and had awful streaks. If this happens, you can usually scrub it off in the tub.

The End

That’s how to apply sunless tanning gel. It’s really easy, and who cares if it’s fake as long as it looks good?
