Daniela, thanks for tipping me off on the way I wrote that about the Autostrada. The way I worded it is unclear. I meant the Autostrada and the other major roads, including non-toll roads were similar for the driving habits. I did make a change in the review and, hopefully, it is now more clear.
Thank you for your nice comment. It was an easy review to write as it was a labor of love. We really did have a fine time.
As a matter of fact, we just returned from Gavi and the hotel there, did a really nice thing. I may have already mentioned this so I apologize if it is a duplication, the hotel gave us 6 bottles of assorted local wines including Dolchetto, Gavi di Gavi and Barbera. This is just a small hotel and none of the staff spoke English. But, they were very attentive and tried to be helpful. They were wonderful and it was a complete surprise to us.
We also had a chance to visit Novi and sampled the world-class Novi chocolates - Mmmm Mmmm Good!
It really was a great trip and when I have some time, I will try to put together another review. I can't say enough about the warmth and hospitality of the Italian people. They are really special.
Daniela, I think you should write something about Northern Italy. Your knowledge is so comprehensive, I can't imagine you not being able to write a sterling review that would more than do yourself justice. I've like your reviews and you will have no trouble adding a lot more to the Northern Italy subject theme. I know that!
BTW, I was pleased to see that they have really gotten serious about the smog pollution reduction for Milan and other major cities. It's probably overdue. That seemed to be the #1 issue on the TV news during our brief stay.

I agree with everything you've written (except for the fact that the Autostrada is toll, and pretty expensive as well. It's the Statali, or SS, that are free of charge).
Excellent, though. I might even refrain from writing about northern Italy after your essay - and I live 1 hour away from Gavi...

Yup, you guessed it! Yes, we did have a great time but I do have to admit that at the end of 3+ weeks, it was time to come home and recharge the batteries. My body just won't keep up with the abuse I used to hand it, unfortunately.
Later, I will write a review of our Lufthansa experience on this trip.
Yes, the driving can be phenomenal. I would not attempt to drive in Rome, however. Florence was bad enough. Too bad the Americans can't learn something about this taking time and care to make sure that their customers are the ones to decide when the meal is over.
Thanks for your kind comments!

Great review on Italy (Reply to this comment)
by NotreDameMBA
Jim, so this is why your epinions were empty from end of April to end of May. It sounds like a great vacation!
I traveled throughout Italy and Greece 3 years ago, and I agree with everything you stated. It brings back very nice memories as well.
The Italians in Rome are incredible drivers. I remember one lady on a scooter zooming into traffic, with her little poodle in between her legs on the scooter, while she was chatting on her cellular phone with one hand, and driving with the other! I was blown away by that show of multi-tasking.
It was also very wierd to not be bothered with the bill when you eat. I had to get used to nagging the server to bring us our bill!
Welcome home!

Again, LS, you are very kind.
Actually, the driving is not that bad as long as one remains alert and get on with the business of driving. Many Americans do it without incident so it can't be that difficult.:)
I do have to say that Northern Italy was the most fun and is at the top of our list of experiences in Europe.

This is one of the best reviews I have read at epinions! I really enjoyed reading it and have learned so much about Italy. After reading your description about driving through Europe, I think I will just take the train while there. Let someone else do the driving. I'm off to read more of your review.

Ah, but, Claudia, Limoncello is available here in the U.S. As a matter of fact, we found it at our local Safeway Store for $17.99. I can't tell you if it is as good as the ones we had in Italy or the ones we brought back with us but, in time, we will sample it. Another place, Beverages and More, has 3 brands ranging in cost from $20 to $30. So, it is available.
Thanks for your kind words!
