Why are good aliens hard to find these days?Jun 15 '01 Write an essay on this topic. The Bottom Line With a plethora of bad sci-fi movies out on the loose, it's rough finding an alien movie with wide-spread appeal. In the end, I love STAR WARS and PITCH BLACK. It's tough to choose a top ten Alien-based film when so many are formulaic; riddled with cliche plots, poor writing and bad puppets. But there are a few that stand out as inventive and solid films that a hardcore sci-fi lover like myself is proud to have in the DVD collection. 1. PITCH BLACK You heard it here first. Incredible atmosphere, good acting, good dialogue, and a few plot twists make this a movie one can easily get into. Not too pretentious, the aliens are only half of the story. Great special effects too. 2. STAR WARS TRILOGY It's hard not to choose something that remains a significant staple in my sci-fi viewing history, especially when I've been a loyal fan for so many years. Granted, there is some really bad effects in Episode IV and I would love to kill them Ewoks and Gungans, but fusing mysticism, family relations, great characters, and amazing wars in space completes the picture. 3. THE FIFTH ELEMENT TFE is very funny at times, has that French flair (Luc Besson directs) to it and has great acting (Willis, Jojovich, Oldman). Even the music is superb (Eric Serra). Great colors and storyline. 4. ALIENS I think ALIENS was the best, although ALIEN RESURRECTION is a close second. The third one was not great (but you knew that). Again, Luc Besson directs AR, but is not able to top the frighteningly cool ALIENS. Even the guns and ships were bombastic. 5. STARSHIP TROOPERS Much like Fifth Element, this is a film that doesn't take itself too seriously. The interjecting "commercials" of propaganda are hilarious. The effects are amazing, but the acting can use some tweaking (or perhaps an overhaul in some cases). 6. STAR TREK: FIRST CONTACT It's tough not to love the Borg, a humanoid race bent on assimilating the technology and bodies of its victims on its quest for perfection. Picard and crew get a big upgrade from the TV show. Excellent tension (inside the ship and out in space) and believable acting. I'm only going to six here because no other films really interest me that are alien specific. Hope you at least agreed with one of my choices :) |
